Business Presentation Coaching: Should You Get a Presentation Coach?

Business Presentation Coaching_ Should You Get a Presentation Coach_

Do you need a business presentation coach? Well… It depends… Last week, I gave several different reasons why presentation skills are important to business success . Great presentation skills can create opportunities for advancement and increase income. How exactly do you improve your presentation skills , though? In this post, we are going to cover the pros and cons of hiring a business presentation coach . Also, we’ll cover how to choose a good coach.

A Good Coach Can Shorten Your Learning Curve

Learning From Other People Helps You Grow Faster

A good example of this is golf. If you just go out, but a set of clubs, and start hacking around, you will likely pick up bad habits. You will figure out a lot of the techniques on your own. However, you will also likely struggle with parts of your game. The process will likely take a long time. If later, you decide that you need a golf coach, you will likely have to work even harder to fix your habits. By getting advice from a golf professional early, though, you can speed up the process.

Business presentation coaching is very similar. A good coach can help you experience success earlier in the process. As a result, your confidence will grow quickly.

Years of Bad Practice Can Stunt Your Growth

I get dozens and dozens of speakers contacting me every month wanting to become a trainer for my company. The first two instructors (other than myself) who started to teach the Fearless Presentation ® presentation skills class , had totally different backgrounds. One was a seasoned teacher who had been training professionals for over 20 years (The Veteran). The second was a recent university graduate (The Kid).

Experience Can Ultimately Hurt You

The Kid, though, went through the entire training process in less than six months. He began teaching as many as six 2-day classes every month. Over the next couple of years, he became the most requested instructor in the company. He was teaching classes for some of the biggest Fortune 500 companies, and he was still in his 20’s. He generated almost a quarter of a million dollars in teaching fees every year, as well.

Undoing Bad Habits Takes Longer and is Often Temporary

Five years later, the difference between the two was night and day. The Veteran started struggling. I started getting complaints from his class members. I had one of my other instructors in the area pop in on one of his classes just to see what was going on. The other instructor called me during one of the class breaks and said, “Doug, I’m not sure what this guy is teaching, but it is NOT the Fearless Presentations ® class.” I spent another three months working with him. He improved for a while, but eventually slipped back. With a heavy heart, I eventually had to let the instructor go.

Turns out, that as he was teaching the class, he’d start to alter the process ever-so-slightly based on his experience. This slight alteration caused a snowball effect. The minor change would cause a challenge later in the class. Of course, he would have to adapt to this challenge to fix it. When he did, he created a new challenge. Over a couple of years, the class he was teaching didn’t even resemble the true class.

The Kid, however, had none of these challenges. His third year teaching, I was teaching a class in the same city as him. I popped in and watched one of his sessions. I was amazed at the way he led the class and the wisdom that he showed when he taught. His experience was different. He mastered the structure that I taught him and improved on it. (I ended up adding a lot of his alteration into the official class, later.)

The Business Presentation Coaching Helped One and Hurt the Other

He Learned From My Mistakes and Was Able To Grow Faster

The Veteran, though, never saw me as an expert that he could learn from. He never thought of me as his coach. Instead of using the process as a way for him to grow, he just went through the motions. As a result, when I wasn’t around, he went back to his old habits.

So, before you pick a business presentation coach, make sure that you start the process with the right attitude. Pick a coach that has already done something that you want to do. Them be the sponge. Learn from the coach’s successes and failures. That way you don’t have to go through the whole learning curve yourself.

What a Good Business Presentation Coach Can Do for You.

A good presentation coach can do a lot of positive things for you. Just as we discussed above, a coach can shorten your learning curve. A coach can also help you take corrective actions to improve your performance. Below are some of the main benefits of coaching.

  • Help You Design Your Presentations

One of the most difficult parts of public speaking is having to deliver a bad speech. A good coach can help you improve your presentation which makes it easier to deliver them.

  • Improve Your Delivery

A good business presentation coach can show you ways to improve the retention of your audience. For instance, subtly repeating your main concepts throughout the presentation can help. A good coach will also likely help you come up with good examples, stories, and analogies for your speech.

  • Increase Creativity and Showmanship

Since a good coach will likely have seen dozens (or hundreds) of presentations, they can add some creativity. For instance, I don’t think of myself as being highly creative. However, after viewing thousands of presenters over the years, I remember a lot of unique performances. Every time I share one of these with a new presenter, he/she will often take these ideas and improve them.

  • Help You Customize Your Content for the Audience

The first thing that a good coach will do is try to identify who you’ll be delivering your presentation to. The presentation coach will then help you tailor the content specific to this particular audience. Most often, when I’m asked to do coaching, is for this specific purpose. The speaker has a big presentation coming up, and he/she wants to nail that speech. A big part of that is making sure that the content is what the audience wants from the presentation.

  • Deliver More Fluid Group Presentations

If you happen to be delivering a group presentation, you have a higher chance of experiencing challenges. First, the group leader or executive will sometimes force the group to bend to his or her style. Second, it can be awkward to practice as a group. A good coach can make this process much more fluid and streamlined. Since the coach is the expert, the executive will often defer to this expertise.

What a Good Business Presentation Coach Will NOT Do for You.

We have laid out a lot of the positives. What are the negatives of presentation coaching? Well, the big one is that sometimes presenters will hire a presentation coach instead of just speaking more. Although hiring a business presentation coach can speed up the process, it won’t eliminate the process.

  • Help You Reduce Public Speaking Fear

Hiring a business presentation coach to work with you one-on-one will NOT HELP YOU REDUCE NERVOUSNESS. The only way to reduce public speaking anxiety is to have a series of successes, strung together, over a short period of time. Remember that presenting in front of a single coach is just a conversation. It isn’t an actual presentation. So, the moment you stand up in front of a real group, that nervousness will still be there. One reason that we have such great success with our classes is that each presenter gets one-on-one coaching. Also, though, they get to present in front of a group (the rest of the class). So, it is the best of both worlds.

  • Improve Your Interaction with an Audience

It is incredibly difficult to learn to work with an audience if you don’t have one. So, if you want to get better at audience participation or reading the audience, coaching can’t do that. One of the things that our presentation skills classes do very well is to help participants gain confidence tailoring the presentation on-the-fly. So, if the presenter looks out into the audience and sees confused faces, he/she makes adjustments. That is difficult to do in one-on-one coaching sessions.

  • Be Nice on Your Pocketbook

The theory behind a great presentation class is that the cost of coaching is split between a small group. A good business presentation coach will likely charge about $3500 per day for his/her time. So, two days of coaching can be $7,000 plus the instructor’s expenses. However, with a class, you’d split that fee between five to 10 people. The investment per person is much, much less. So, you will get much better value if you invite a few coworkers to your coaching sessions.

How-to-choose-the-best-presentation-coach-for-your-needs-header

Most of us who are not naturally gifted with oral communication, when it comes to preparing for a speech , we could benefit from a presentation coach. Some of us may find public speaking intimidating and may not find it natural to pick up on. These reasons might make it plausible to hire a presentation coach. One thing is for sure, at some point in life most of us will be tasked with speaking in front of a crowd.

Whether you’re giving a speech at a wedding or pitching an idea to staff, or even presenting information to an entire audience, brushing up on your presentation skills could not hurt. Let’s say you’re presenting in a board room, today we will touch on ways a coach can help strengthen your presentation approach.

What is presentation coaching?

The objective of presentation skills coaching is to forge a community of dynamic communicators who can push others into action from their speeches. It involves working with a coach that provides personalized guidance to improve various aspects of presenting, ideally like a presentation coach or a communication coach .

There’s more to a message than just delivering it verbally. You must also interact with your audience , use clever slides that astound but don’t distract, adjust the tone of your voice so it sounds confident yet friendly … you’re starting to get the idea.

What is a presentation coach?

A presentation skills coach can help you with your speech anxiety and debunk the idea that not anyone can be proficient at public speaking. You want to present your ideas coherently without boring your attendees. No one will remember your speech if it isn’t accurately worded.

If it never penetrates, nothing will get through to your audience. The methodology of great presentation coaching is where real magic takes place for most presenters to keep things focused.

What goes into presentation skills coaching?

Presentation coaches will normally fixate on three necessary presentation skills for effective communication. These include:

  • The actual presentation itself and the Big Idea™ you are trying to convey
  • How you deliver the speech (cadence, tone, etc.)
  • How you engage / interact with the people you’re presenting to.

A proficient presentation skills coach highlights flaws in speech by observing mannerisms during your rehearsal interaction. You should never underestimate the importance of a speaker coach . Just to clarify, a presentation coach and speaker coach have subtle differences in the terminology, but both types of coaches are essentially the same.

What kind of scenarios have we done executive presentation coaching before?

Storytelling is the foundational backbone of our methodologies. We’ve provided immersive presentation training to well-known brands and their learners, and we’ve had high satisfaction and application rates.

For example, when Cloudflare came to Duarte for guidance, they were looking to enhance communication through a “thought leadership program” they wanted to create to help drive revenue and retain their talent.

They wanted to go from a $1 billion dollar company to a $5 billion-dollar company, and one way to help them get there was to upskill their sales department. They lacked the persuasive communication skills to accomplish this, and turned to Duarte for help.

Duarte brought Cloudflare aboard and trained their sales leaders in storytelling techniques. After a four-month journey with us, Cloudflare had the skills to better connect with audiences, leading to a strong return of investment.

As done with businesses like Cloudflare, we provide tools to improve sales effectiveness, customer engagement, and revenue growth.

Speaker coaching

In another example, we were tasked with perhaps a monumental presentation. Duarte performed presentation coaching for former vice president Al Gore. He had mountains of data, statistics and photo archives captured, and the Duarte team was tasked to create compelling slides to enhance Al Gore’s talking points. The result, the construction of an Oscar-winning documentary called “An Inconvenient Truth” .

Many projects and speakers can benefit from a presentation coach.

Why hire a presentation coach?

It’s not just words that you’re saying on that stage, those words must deliver impact and move audiences. Let’s say you have a big boardroom presentation coming up, a presentation coach with strong expertise can come in and help you design key messages for each of those board members. Remember, understanding your audience is key. A tool like our Audience Needs Map ™ can help with this step.

Audience resources colored button

When to not hire a presentation coach

While a presentation coach can help you with sales effectiveness and winning leadership buy-in, there are several factors to consider why you might not need one.

For example, you may not have a high-stakes presentation coming up, making you think twice about acquiring a coach. Hiring a specialized coach for anything is an investment. But just like in sports, the investment is worth it when the stakes are high.

Depending on what you’re in the market for of course, you may not be looking to advance your team’s communication skills right now. Presentation coaches can possibly be seen as an investment, especially for smaller businesses or if you’re operating on a tight budget. In these instances, you might be better off enrolling your team (or yourself) in a group training, like Captivate ™. This is our highly-rated public speaking course that is conducted on a regular cadence, provides group feedback, and allows for rehearsals and practice sessions.

Also, if you feel your presentation delivery is being impeded by the visuals or flow of your presentation, you might want to take a presentation visual design course like Slide:ology ® or Slide Design . A presenter equipped with a top-notch presentation can move mountains!

The true power of Duarte’s business presentation coaching

There are many options to choose from when evaluating presentation skills coaches. Sometimes, you might not need a presentation coach, just a training like our public speaking course Captivate ™. (Shameless brag: The course was recognized as the #1 world’s top communication development program at the Global Gurus 2023 Awards).

Realizing your strengths as a presenter and wishing to amplify them is one of the main reasons for looking into business presentation coaching. Through Duarte, you’re exposed to an array of opportunities to fine tune your skills, because coaching and training combined will lead to astronomical results.

If you have a team of emerging leaders you know are looking to step up their game on the stage, let’s dig deep and figure out where your pain points are and how we can mold your presentation skills to blow some socks off.

Of if you’d like to hire a presentation coach for yourself, don’t delay. We have rotating availability, so reserve a coach today.

Visual aids can help or hurt a presentation. Whether you are using PowerPoint, Keynote, Prezi, slides, video, a software interface, or other visual support, you need to make sure that the visuals won’t distract from the presentation. Many speakers have chosen abandon visual aids altogether and even proclaim that they are above using such tools. However, well-utilized visuals will significantly improve a presentation. This training will teach the best visual aid practices and offer the opportunity to practice techniques with individualized coaching feedback. Listeners will appreciate how the skillful use of visual aids truly enhances your presentations.

Speakers must prepare to answer real questions about their topic. Sometimes, listeners ask friendly, genuine questions, but often, you might be tasked with answering aggressive or set-up questions. In either case, the ability to handle even the most challenging question in a clear, comfortable, and competent manner is an important skill. Whether you have been called to answer questions at a congressional committee, in a sales meeting, or during a team presentation, this module will teach you how to hear and understand questions in order to respond with practical answers.

Have you ever wondered how some people always have the right thing to say at the right time? There is an art to handling yourself well in just about any setting—from dealing with an angry customer to holding a political debate or managing a contentious investor meeting.

Imagine yourself in front of the executive committee, the board of directors, the press, or a client, and someone requests that you speak on an unfamiliar topic. Perhaps you are asked a tough question that you hadn’t anticipated. What do you say? Thinking on your feet is a module that teaches you how to process and organize your thoughts quickly in a way that will help you communicate clearly and with confidence

What two words would you like people to say about you after you have left a meeting or a conversation? The answer defines your communication style. Style coaching is one of our most popular leadership and management offerings. It allows senior executives, managers, and emerging leaders to achieve their personal vision of how they wish to present themselves. Our coaches work with clients on their core communication skills, beginning with their two style words. The result is authentic, comfortable, and effective leadership or management capabilities.

Most crucial business communication occurs between leaders, managers, board members, and shareholders. Because Boards advise and direct management teams on key decisions, it is critical that leaders and managers clearly communicate the vision, metrics, and progress of the organization. Having worked with thousands of managers and board members, we have developed valuable insight into how relationships, presentations, handling questions, and more can affect your communication success. Whether you’re new to senior management or an old pro, this module will allow you to hone your Board and shareholder presentations and share your thoughts in a clear, concise manner. Our guidance will help you strengthen your relationships and effectiveness with your Board and shareholders.

Since the 1990s, coaching and mentoring have become widely used to develop employees in the business world and are important skills for anyone in a managerial or leadership role. Learn how to communicate in both coaching and mentoring styles while learning the differences between the two. Among other things, learn Socratic questioning, goal setting, skills in accountability, and ways to inspire that lead to complete development.

At times, speaking with coworkers, your staff, your boss, and, yes, your customers can be difficult. They may come to you with stories about their problems or your mistakes. They might even mistreat you. We need to remember that there are always two sides to every story. Learn how to diffuse difficult situations and become the difficult person’s advocate rather than the enemy.

When relationships are strong, you can communicate anything. When they are not strong, even the simplest feedback becomes difficult. This module provides an understanding of why and how strong relationships are created using our original research, which has unveiled the two most essential characteristics for building a solid working relationship. This module utilizes practice to strengthen the techniques and skills that foster trusting relationships.

Listening is not just about hearing—it involves the understanding and evaluation of what is heard. Whether you’re in a face-to-face meeting or talking on the phone, leaders and managers must exhibit comfort and proficiency in six specific areas of listening, or messages can be misunderstood. These qualities and techniques are the focus of this module. In addition, this module covers the top ten barriers to listening and how to overcome them. This is one of our most popular topics.

Have you ever felt that your listeners were confused? Have listeners ever asked you to get to the point? Truly connecting with your listeners is fundamental to all communication and critical for a successful presentation. This module teaches you how to make your point and engage all of your listeners. It does not provide a one-size-fits-all methodology but instead covers a whole range of skills from which you may choose the best approach for specific groups.

Business speaking requires a mixture of information and persuasion. Both are critical, and you use both in different situations and for various reasons. The distinction between these two types of speaking is that informative speaking lists data and impartially clarifies and enlightens with no particular goal other than making information clear. Persuasive speaking urges a partisan decision, favors a position, and tries to garner acceptance for that position. In many presentations, the speaker will use both information and persuasion in order to convince the listeners.

This training will help you understand the difference between informative and persuasive presentation. It teaches how to implement these concepts in your content and delivery and the three ways of persuasion that are used in virtually all presentations we see today. You’ll learn how to choose the proper mode of persuasion and how to match your message to your listeners.

Do your listeners ask you to repeat keywords? The ability to speak clearly is an important skill, no matter who you are. There are several ways to lose your listeners, but poor articulation, mumbling, and lack of volume are the most preventable. Don’t force listeners to work harder to understand the words coming out of your mouth! This module on communication excellence will teach key sounds and practice techniques to ensure that you are speaking clearly.

Your customers will often pay attention to how you sound as much as what you are saying. A positive interaction can depend on your tone and inflection, speed, and projection.

Plus, words matter! Your choice of words, such as “customers,” “clients,” “guests,” or “patrons,” will shape their perception, and perception shapes service communication. Don’t let your choice of words become a distraction during a customer interaction. This teaches participants the various sounds of service and how to master their sounds to best communicate with customers.

TAKE THE FIRST STEP

Right out the door, you want to build a connection with your audience. Effective presentation training teaches you that opening with a story is a powerful and reliable way to accomplish this. The story or narrative format will have the audience caring about who you are, where you’re from, and why the subject material matters. Otherwise, our other advice is to PUNCH the audience.

Our training is based on proven performing arts techniques backed by the neuroscience of communication—and we teach you through experiential learning so you develop practical and applicable skills. And we don’t just offer presentation training in general. We believe that you make the best impression and the highest quality connections when you discover how to be yourself. People don’t connect with skill sets. People connect with people—especially unique individuals. When you know how to best be you, that’s when you can use presentation skills training to maximum effect.

There are really two goals and both are of equal importance: One, get your message across in a way that is clear and easy to understand. Two, get your audience to take action on what they hear. You can’t have one without the other. The audience won’t take action if they don’t understand. Clarity and motivation are your two goals.

An effective conclusion is not a mere recap of what you’ve covered. You’re trying to get people to take action, not just remember what you’ve said. Bluntly invite the audience to visit a website or make a purchase. Make the path to action clear. Display QR codes in your slides. A presentation trainer can give you expert advice for a phenomenal opening, middle, and close to any presentation. If you’re looking for some quick advice, then this blog is ideal for you.

Clear Points Messaging LLC

One to One Presentation Skills & Business Presentation Coaching

business presentation coaching

Do you need a one to one presentation skills coach? Do you have a business presentation due soon? You don’t have time, or you don’t have a clue what points you need to get across to your audience to best influence them?

A Clear Points business presentation coach can help you.

We will quickly brainstorm together and get you clear points and a brief outline to get you started on a presentation, an important email or speech.

The goal of the Quick Message session is to transform your jumbled thoughts into useful, influential and concise points.

By the end of session you’ll have key messages you need to prepare and deliver your speech, communication plan or pitch.

Customers use the Quick Message Plan when they are in a bind and need points to share quickly, or to prepare for an upcoming speech, announcement or presentation.

4 Simple Steps to Business Presentation Coaching

We will build the first draft of your presentation in our first sessions!

(Guaranteed)

business presentation coaching

1. We brainstorm together on why your topic and recommendation to your audience is unique and beneficial. We simply pull your expertise out and clarify in a way that makes sense to the common person.

2. We build your message. Once we have created a rough outline of your message, we go through an editing process and make sure it’s in your words and you agree to all the points.

3. We create a first draft of your presentation during our first session!

4. Determine next steps, whether it is more research or if design is needed for the presentation.

Jimmy Marlin Epperson

Your one to one presentation skills coach

Jimmy Marlin hangs out where messaging, influence and strategic communications meet in order to create change. He likes to spend that time with managers and technical experts who need help explaining their insights, research or suggestion to less data fluent audiences.

He approaches influencing others and sharing ideas in a specific way. He doesn’t believe in being overly political, groveling in front of other people or brown-nosing to get ideas accepted by others.

Personally public speaking can be difficult and intimidating. LaQuita Ann minimized these feelings and helped me overcome great odds so I could ultimately communicate my message successfully.

Not only does she work with you on performance but on the material. She becomes fully invested in you and your goal of effectively performing to the best of your ability. She is all in! In my case, I had never spoken for more than a couple hundred people in church or at film screenings.

I had to speak for thousands of extremely influential people at a YPO event and she prepared me emotionally, mentally and physically. I felt like I was able to achieve my best simply because she believed in me. I will never speak in public unless I prepare with LaQuita Ann!

Presentation coaching will teach your sales team the skills that build relationships and win business. We help you craft and deliver unforgettable conversations. We help you move away from pages and decks.  We help you cut the clutter and take your listening skills to a new depth. Let us help you connect and inspire your clients to want to work with you now and for the long-term.

Here is what you will learn:

1.  The Client Oriented Mindset

2.  opening moments, 3.  strong starts, 5.  value proposition, 6.  stand-out solutions, 7.  process-vision, 4.  company overview, 8.  art of dealing with objection.

We helped a financial advisory firm increase their win rate by 50% in their first year of engagement with Speak by Design.  Every team member had 5 coaching sessions and attended two group sessions. We built in targeted training at every career milestone and scheduled refresher sessions every review cycle.  Every member of the firm received coaching, so there was no stigma.  Performance was measured. Quarterly reports on the win rate were circulated.  Bonuses for leaders were reduced if they lost an account and did not schedule a rehearsal with Speak by Design.

An IT product company gave top salespeople 6-months of support plus 6-months of access to on-demand coaching to help perfect their new business presentations. The company saw a 25% increase in win rate on new business presentations from those salespeople over a 12-month period.

These tools are not just about creating visually appealing slides; they are about enhancing communication effectiveness , fostering a more profound understanding, and facilitating tracking progress in learning and development.

Whether for educational purposes, corporate training, or personal growth, coaching presentation tools are applicable across a broad spectrum, adapting seamlessly to the needs of remote work and self-coaching endeavors. They also offer flexibility to adapt content on the fly, catering to the immediate needs and responses of the audience, or repurpose it for other learning mediums: websites, training manual templates , etc.

Goal Setting Templates

PowerPoint goal-setting templates are essential tools for coaches across various domains, including personal development, career progression, business growth, and educational achievements. These templates serve as a foundational structure to help individuals and teams articulate their aspirations, set achievable targets, and outline the steps necessary to attain their objectives.

The structured framework provided by goal-setting templates, be it the SMART framework or others, empowers individuals and teams to articulate their visions clearly and concisely. By breaking down larger objectives into manageable actions and timelines, these templates make the goal achievement process less daunting and more attainable. They encourage accountability, as goals are clearly outlined, and progress can be regularly reviewed. Moreover, the visual aspect of seeing goals laid out in a structured format can significantly boost motivation and commitment.

Customized goal-setting templates not only serve as a practical tool for tracking progress but also act as a constant reminder of the objectives at hand. They facilitate discussions between coaches and clients, making the goal-setting process collaborative and tailored to the individual’s or team’s unique context. Essentially, these templates are more than just planning tools; they are catalysts for growth, motivation, and achievement in pursuing personal and professional excellence.

Potential use cases of Goal Setting PPT Templates:

  • Personal Development Coaching: These templates can guide individuals in setting personal health, education, or lifestyle goals, helping them achieve long-desired dreams or increase their lifestyle well-being.

They can be tailored to include industry-specific benchmarks, making them invaluable for professionals seeking career advancement or transition.
  • Business Coaching: For entrepreneurs and business leaders, these templates offer a framework to set business growth targets, financial goals, and market expansion plans. They help align team efforts into measurable and achievable goals within a pre-determined time frame, which is also very significant for the organization’s survival.
  • Educational Coaching: Educators and students can use goal-setting templates to outline academic achievements, set study targets, and track progress toward educational goals. These tools are handy for managing assignments, exams, and project submission timelines.

Progress Tracking Templates

Progress tracking PPT templates are complementary tools to goal-setting templates, allowing users to remain accountable for their already established goals. By breaking down goals into measurable components and regularly documenting advancements, individuals and teams can see tangible evidence of their efforts, significantly boosting motivation and morale.

These templates serve as a roadmap , providing clear direction and helping to maintain focus on the end goal. They are particularly effective in identifying when progress is stalling, allowing for timely intervention and strategy adjustments. This proactive approach ensures that potential obstacles are addressed before they derail progress, increasing the likelihood of success.

Potential use cases of Progress Tracking PPT Templates:

  • Educational Achievement: Educators and students leverage progress-tracking templates to monitor academic performance, assignment completion, and progression toward educational objectives. They provide a clear overview of where students stand in relation to their academic goals.
  • Fitness and Health Coaching: Fitness coaches use these templates to track clients’ physical milestones, nutritional goals, and overall wellness journeys. They offer a structured way to document workouts, dietary habits, and health improvements. When clients hit plateau phases, these versatile templates are a data-backed encouragement method.

Feelings Wheel

Feelings Wheel PowerPoint templates are innovative tools designed to facilitate emotional awareness and communication. These templates visually represent a wide range of emotions, organized in a circular format or wheel, to help individuals identify, articulate, and understand their feelings more clearly.

Feelings wheel PPT template

The Feelings Wheel is a powerful resource in coaching, therapy, education, and team-building activities, where emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in personal development and interpersonal relationships.

Potential use cases of Feelings Wheel PPT Templates:

  • Therapy and Counseling: In therapeutic settings, feelings wheel templates assist clients in recognizing and expressing their emotions. They can be beneficial for those who find it challenging to verbalize their feelings, offering a visual means to explore and discuss their emotional state. CBT therapies quickly come into mind as potential use cases of these slides, since they allow patients to acknowledge the emotional patterns that led to life-situational or work-induced illnesses (anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, etc.)
  • Education and Classroom Management: Teachers use the feelings wheel to teach emotional literacy to students. By helping children and teenagers identify their emotions, educators can foster a supportive classroom environment that addresses students’ emotional well-being.
  • Corporate Training and Team Building: In the workplace, these templates enhance emotional intelligence, or emotional IQ, among employees. They aid in team-building exercises, conflict resolution, and improving communication skills, promoting a more empathetic and collaborative work culture.

For more information, check our collection of feelings templates for PowerPoint .

Skill Development Templates

By working with skill development templates, users can combine both goal setting and progress tracking with a tailored approach to learning. Frequently, skill development templates highlight the areas we are not aware we don’t know, meaning, stepping out of our comfort zone. For this very reason, we can find an extensive range of templates, from lessons learned to skills radars .

Comfort to Growth Zone PPT slide

Potential use cases of Skill Development PPT Templates:

  • Professional Development: In the corporate world, skill development templates are essential for outlining training sessions , career progression plans, and professional upskilling initiatives. They are mainly used by HR personnel to help employees focus on specific competencies needed for their roles or for career advancement, such as leadership, technical skills, or communication.
  • Personal Growth: Individuals committed to self-improvement utilize skill development templates to set personal learning goals, such as learning the skills required to embark on a new business journey. Life coaches frequently use visual frameworks like these to help clients understand the bigger picture and not just focus on their desired outcome.

Feedback and Evaluation Templates

This category answers to one important stage in any coaching or mentoring session: the feedback. Mentors or managers use this kind of template to illustrate their mentee’s performance in a development interest category. For example, we can think about the feedback on a training program on conflict-resolution skills for sales representatives.

Assessment and Recommendation slide for coaching presentations

Please consider that this approach is strictly linked to individuals, not project evaluations. These evaluation templates serve as a bridge between the mentor and the individual, ensuring that feedback is communicated in a constructive, actionable, and supportive manner.

Potential use cases of Feedback and Evaluation PPT Templates:

  • Corporate Performance Reviews: Feedback and evaluation templates are integral to performance review processes, where managers and employees discuss past performance, career aspirations, and future growth opportunities. These templates help promote open dialogue and mutual understanding.
  • Self-Development Coaching: Coaches and mentors use these templates to guide clients through self-reflection and personal growth journeys. By evaluating progress toward personal goals, individuals gain insights into their behaviors, motivations, and areas where support is needed.

Wheel of Life

Rooted in life coach worksheets and personal development methodologies, the Wheel of Life represents various aspects of an individual’s life as segments in a circular diagram, much like the spokes of a wheel. These segments typically include career, finances, health, family and friends, romance, personal growth, fun and recreation, and physical environment, though they can be customized to suit individual preferences.

Wheel of Life slide

The wheel allows individuals to rate their level of satisfaction in each life area, providing a snapshot of their overall life balance. It transforms abstract concepts of satisfaction and balance into tangible, actionable insights, motivating individuals to pursue improvements and celebrate achievements.

Potential use cases of Wheel of Life PPT Templates:

  • Self-Development Coaches : Individuals seeking personal growth utilize the Wheel of Life for self-reflection, evaluating their satisfaction levels in various life domains. This introspective process aids in identifying priorities and setting actionable goals for balanced life improvement.
  • Career Counseling : Career counselors incorporate the Wheel of Life into counseling sessions to understand clients’ broader life contexts and how their careers contribute to their overall life satisfaction. This holistic perspective ensures career advice supports overall life goals.
  • Workshops and Group Sessions : In group settings, the Wheel of Life acts as an interactive exercise to engage participants in discussions about life balance and shared experiences.

Mindfulness and Well-being Templates

In this category, we can find templates tailored for awareness, stress management, and holistic health. These templates guide individuals and groups seeking to enhance their mental, emotional, and physical well-being through mindfulness practices. They encompass a range of topics, including meditation techniques, stress reduction strategies, emotional regulation, and lifestyle adjustments that promote health and happiness.

Wellness coaching slide

In the workplace, these templates contribute to creating healthier, more resilient teams. They offer practical strategies for employees to manage stress and maintain focus, aiming for a positive work environment and boosting overall productivity.

In educational settings, school counselors use mindfulness templates to support students’ mental health and well-being. They equip students with coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety, which are essential skills for academic success and personal development.

Potential use cases of Mindfulness and Wellbeing PPT Templates:

  • Workplace Well-being Programs: In the corporate world, mindfulness and well-being templates are integrated into employee wellness programs. They are used to conduct workshops and seminars focused on stress management, work-life balance, and cultivating a mindful workplace culture. These initiatives help reduce burnout, enhance employee satisfaction, and improve productivity.
  • Healthcare and Therapy: Healthcare professionals and therapists implement these templates to support patient education on mindfulness practices that can aid in managing anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
  • Educational Institutions : Councilors rely upon mindfulness and well-being templates in the curriculum to teach students about emotional regulation, stress management, and healthy lifestyle habits. These lessons are crucial in developing students’ resilience and promoting a positive school environment.
  • Personal Development Workshops: Coaches and personal development professionals use these templates in workshops and individual sessions to guide clients through mindfulness exercises, self-reflection activities, and strategies for enhancing personal well-being.

For our case study, we will consider a life coach named Emily, who is helping Susan. Susan is a corporate worker with a tight agenda. She has two young children, and she recently started resenting her job as she feels like she is missing out on important milestones in her children’s lives.

Susan also loves baking, and gets quite a lot of compliments from friends and fellow parents about what she considers “her true passion.” Even if Susan would love the idea of starting her own bakery shop at home, she’s fearful about her potential income and making such an abrupt career change.

Therefore, she hires Emily’s services to help her transition from her current job to her dream life.

After some initial meetings, Emily decides to create a slide deck to present the results of her findings on Emily’s life, and which potential tactics they can use to tackle her fear of change.

Slide 1 – Introduction Slide

With some cool photos of bakery shops, Emily crafts an introduction slide titled “Embracing Change: Your Path to a Fulfilling Life,” using the subtitle “Understanding Susan’s Journey Towards Her Dream Career.”

Title slide coaching presentation tools

Slide 2 – Understanding Susan

After the engaging title slide, she presents a detailed analysis of Susan’s feelings about her current situation – represented in the Feelings Wheel – and a pie chart showcasing a detailed structure of Susan’s current time assignment per area. This proves to be an extremely resourceful tool as Susan can acknowledge how much time she loses in commuting and meetings, two aspects she totally despises, rather than the time she spends as a financial analyst (the career path she chose).

Slide 3 – Susan’s Dreams

The third slide proposes an exercise using the Wheel of Life to indicate:

  • How in alignment does she feel with her current life
  • What would her life look like if she pursued her dream of a full-time career

Considering her current job consumes up to 14 daily hours, she could at least spend 2 hours a day – roughly 60% of her commute time – exercising outdoors and improving her health. She would be working from home in a better environment while caring for her children. She can engage in local community activities and promote her business. Mostly, she can spend quality time with her husband, as her job wouldn’t require such an intense stress burden.

Wheel of Life exercise slide

Slide 4 – The Challenges Ahead

Emily introduces the Ikigai concept of self-motivation. Then, a matrix slide lists each of Susan’s fears regarding a career change. Next to each point, Emily indicates the reason why Susan feels that way and potential strategies to treat each element.

Ikigai slide in coaching presentation

Slide 5 – Testimonials

The fifth slide of this presentation links to a video created by Emily’s team about past clients’ experiences in career transitioning and how they are feeling after two years. Susan can relate to some cases about their financial position or the radical industry change.

Slide 6 – Susan’s Skills and Strengths

Using an Essential Skills Radar, Emily mapped out Susan’s current skill set and which areas she should focus on for her new career path.

Skills radar in coaching presentation

Slide 7 – Market Potential

Like any other business idea, the viability has to be studied. Emily’s team thoroughly analyzed the current market situation for local bakeries in Susan’s area, mapping out potential strategies to tackle that can set her business apart from competitors.

Slide 8 – Practical Exercise

Emily opted to engage Susan in this presentation by putting into practice a joint study of the Financial Planning and Strategy required to set up a bakery shop. Since Susan is a financial analyst, she’s well aware of the metrics to evaluate and how to develop a careful plan and aim to stick within her current savings – asking for a loan was a big no for Susan.

This type of interactive exercise helps Susan acknowledge that all she did in the past won’t be neglected. It’s still part of her life and skill set, and she can put the effort into something of personal value. Additionally, she can start mentoring her kids in entrepreneurship, an idea she’s quite fond of.

Slide 9 – Work/Life Balance

As this was a point of particular interest in Susan’s life, especially given her stress-induced illnesses within the past two years, Emily’s team curated a plan so Susan doesn’t feel she has to work 24/7 during the initial stages and how she prevents burnout considering she will be her own boss.

Slides 10 & 11 – The Action Plan

Using goal-setting PPT templates, Emily is able to map out all of Susan’s career-related goals to help her transition from her current job to her dream life. These include pending projects, savings, investments, courses, etc. Each goal is given a timeframe to be completed according to the SMART goal-setting framework.

SMART Goal setting slide

Then, a roadmap to track the progress of this action plan is introduced with some excellent graphics. Susan truly feels excited and sees the light at the end of the road to make her dreams come true.

Slide 12 – Closing Slide

The presentation concludes with one simple phrase in white with a contrasting background: “Your thoughts?”. There, Emily allows Susan to express what she considers out of this suggested plan, her doubts, and which path they should follow. It acts as a Question-and-answer session but in a more relaxed format.

Ending slide coaching presentation

As we can see, coaching presentation tools are not that different from tools commonly used in other activities, yet the Wheel of Life and the Feelings Wheel stand out as tools specifically tailored for this purpose. Context is key, and any presenter should work creatively to represent content clearly while connecting with their target audience.

We hope this introduction to coaching presentation tools inspires you to create unique slide decks for your mentoring projects. See you next time!

Strengthen presentation skills with Speaker Coach

business presentation coaching

  • Content Type
  • Learning accelerators
  • Microsoft Teams

Concise and clear speaking is an essential communication skill that employers value. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers , approximately 96 percent of businesses view oral and written communication as an essential competency but only 42 percent of employees are proficient at these skills. In classrooms there is always someone presenting information. Whether students are engaging in discussion or giving reports, or educators are presenting new material or conferencing with students, presentation skills are critical.

Speaker Coach , a Microsoft Learning Accelerator , enhances both foundational and workplace skills. With a focus on public speaking, Speaker Coach uses innovative technology that automatically analyzes a speaker’s communication style and helps them present information more effectively. Whether they are a native speaker or an English Language Learner, any student will benefit from the practical feedback and custom reports that highlight areas of strength and ways to improve delivery. Speaker Coach helps students not only build critical skills, but they also develop confidence in their speaking abilities while practicing.

Designed for student-driven learning and educator freedom

Intelligent, automatic help is one of many reasons why educators choose to use Speaker Coach with their students. Like other Learning Accelerators, Speaker Coach offers:

  • Real-time coaching: Immediate personalized coaching and practice for students
  • Inclusive design: Students can practice where they feel most comfortable and use built-in accessibility tools that increase access
  • Time-saving efficiency: Learning Accelerators are built into Microsoft 365 and offer technology-assisted learning instead of teacher-directed instruction
  • Actionable insights: Help track progress, display where students are challenged and excelling, and provide a more holistic view of student progress

More importantly, Speaker Coach incorporates good pedagogy. Students oversee their own learning by following detailed, pragmatic feedback that can be applied to the task at hand: improving communication clarity and enhancing public speaking skills. The analysis also enables students to learn whenever and wherever it is most convenient without needing someone else to participate.

From individual support to following a curriculum pacing guide, educators have more teaching commitments than time to complete all that is required of them. That makes Speaker Coach a valuable tool for educators; it frees time for other tasks because students can use Speaker Coach’s automatic feedback instead of direct teacher intervention. Mike Thomas, Senior Digital Learning Analyst for Springfield Public Schools, believes that Speaker Coach and other Learning Accelerators positively impact teaching in his district:

School is 180 days at six hours a day, and we must prioritize what is being taught. By having these tools available, it puts less focus trying to always deliver. It gives students the ability to learn for themselves. With tools like Reading Progress, Immersive Reader, and now Speaker Coach, I think we can take that student empowerment to the next level.” Mike Thomas, Senior Digital Learning Analyst for Springfield Public Schools

Perfect your next PowerPoint presentation

Get feedback on your presentation

Speaker Coach in PowerPoint provides suggestions while a student speaks, and it delivers a tailored, final report that is packed with ways to improve their delivery. Using a computer’s camera and microphone, Speaker Coach analyzes key qualities of effective communication:

  • Pace: Monitor speed and receive pacing suggestions that increase audience recall and comprehension
  • Filler Words: Highlight frequently used filler words like “um” and “you know”
  • Pitch: Listen for monotone pitch that can negatively affect messaging
  • Pronunciation: Isolate indistinct pronunciation or mispronunciation
  • Originality: Call out instances when reading directly from a slide
  • Inclusiveness: Discover when language is not inclusive in areas like disability, gender, and race
  • Speech Refinements: Spot speech problems like wordiness and euphemisms
  • Repetitive Words: Count words and phrases that are repeatedly spoken
  • Body Language: Analyze physical mannerisms, posture, and eye contact

In addition to automatic, real-time suggestions while practicing, Speaker Coach generates a personalized report that can be used as a learning tool. Each report is customized to the speaking session, contains interactive feedback and analysis, and is privately shared so that students can securely review suggestions without the pressure of having another person listen and critique.

business presentation coaching

Rehearsal report summarizes your performance and provides actionable feedback

Because Speaker Coach automatically listens and analyzes multiple aspects of a presentation, students can use it at school or at home without someone else participating. Speaker Coach is like a teaching assistant who is always available and willing to offer constructive feedback in a judgement-free environment.

Students in Spring Public Schools in Springfield, MA have been using Speaker Coach to practice and prepare for classroom presentations. Educators are already seeing improvements in how ideas are communicated.

Speaker Coach is giving the students the confidence to be able to present in front of others and share their voice.” Melissa Zeitz, Digital Literacy and Computer Science Teacher for Springfield Public Schools

Presenter Coach makes for better PowerPoint presentations

Presenter Coach or Rehearse in PowerPoint for Windows helps polish your presentation before going before an audience.

Getting Started with Coach

Rehearsal report, coach isn’t always a good listener, better rehearsals.

This cloud-based feature is PowerPoint Online (web browser) and PowerPoint 365 for Windows If you don’t have Coach in your version of PowerPoint, try it from the web version of PowerPoint .

Make your slide deck and script (or at least speaking notes).

Check that your microphone is working and can clearly ‘hear’ your voice (like Dictation, Presenter Coach doesn’t have any in-built test for this).

Go to Slide Show | Rehearse with Coach.

business presentation coaching

With PowerPoint Online the same option is on the View tab.

That opens the Presenter Coach dialog.

business presentation coaching

The presentation will open, full screen, but with a Rehearse box bottom right.

business presentation coaching

Click Start Rehearsing.

Talk into the computer microphone and move through the slides just like a normal presentation.

The Coach box bottom right indicates if it’s ‘listening’ with occasional encouragements.

business presentation coaching

Behind the scenes, your spoken words are being converted to text (just like Dictation in Word) and compared with the slide text.   The speed that you talk is also monitored.

Click on the microphone icon to pause the rehearsal and restart later.

business presentation coaching

When you’ve finished your rehearsal, exit the presentation as usual (press Escape) then wait a moment to see a Rehearsal Report.

Some Rehearsal Report items only appear if there’s a problem so each report can be different.

business presentation coaching

Summary – rehearsal time and slide count

Originality – compares the slide text with what you said.

Pace – don’t go too fast or slow. Presenter Coach shows your speaking pace.  Between 100 and 165 words per minute is considered ideal.

Pace over time – a graph of your speaking pace during the rehearsal.

Pitch – Coach will warn about a monotone speech with little tone variation.

Speech Refinements – lookout for “wordiness, euphemisms, possessive/plural forms, agreement within noun phrases, and informal language.” .  A mixture of grammar checking and certain key phrases.

Sensitive Phrases – Coach listens for “culturally sensitive phrases in these areas: disability, age, gender, race, sexual orientation, mental health, sensitive geopolitical topics, and profanity. “  It’ll warn you if the transcribed text contains something that might offend.

Fillers – filler words indicate a speaker lacking confidence or knowledge of the subject.  Microsoft doesn’t say what they think are ‘fillers’ but “Over time, Coach will learn from your experience using this feature.”

The quality of the feedback is very dependant on transcription (Speech to Text) happening in the background.

Coach doesn’t have an option to see the transcription it’s made, so it’s hard to judge if the results are accurate.  For example, if the transcription is poor, just reading slides won’t be picked up as an ‘Originality’ issue.  Speech Refinements, Sensitive Phrases and Filler tests are all compromised by a bad transcription.

Customers would be better served if they could ‘dig down’ to see the transcription.  If the ‘speech to text’ hasn’t worked well, some improvements to the microphone setup might help get better Presenter Coach results.  A transcription view would let customers judge the accuracy of the report and give better feedback to the Presenter Coach team.

Rehearsing a presentation is important but too many of us just do the slides and speaker notes without trying out the whole thing.  We’re as guilty of that as anyone.

The problem is feedback on your presentation rehearsal.  While Presenter Coach isn’t perfect, it does give some guidance and something to aim for in preparing your speech with slides.

First impressions matter: here’s why

9 tips for making a great first impression, dos and don’ts of first impressions, how to recover from making a bad first impression.

Did you know that a single glance at a person's face is enough to form a first impression? Research shows that it takes between just 33–100 milliseconds for someone to form judgments about your character .

Such a short amount of time is clearly not enough to accurately gauge a person’s character. But it’s only natural for us to make assumptions about someone when we first meet them.

We also get attached to our initial impressions of others and find it difficult to change our opinion. Even when presented with contrasting evidence.

As the old saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a great first impression.

Read on to learn why first impressions are so powerful and how to make a good first impression that will last.

What are first impressions?

First impressions are the almost-instant conclusions we draw when meeting someone for the first time. We form this opinion by quickly taking in information about a person, including their face, dress, posture, and tone of voice.

colleagues-chatting-how-to-make-a-good-first-impression

We form a not-always-accurate opinion about many of a person’s qualities when we first meet them. Some of the qualities we try to gauge include a person’s friendliness, honesty, trustworthiness , and competence.

A first impression becomes a filter that we use for all future interactions with that person. It can be very difficult to change someone’s first impression of us.

First impressions last. Whether they are accurate or not, it normally takes a long time and concerted effort to change a first impression.

Because they are largely subconscious, first impressions are very persistent. Even in the face of contrary evidence. Because of our implicit biases and cognitive biases , we see the world and other people through our own set of filters and make decisions based on them.

All of your relationships are affected by the first impression that you make.

If people’s first impression of you is that you are friendly, competent, and trustworthy , they are more likely to feel comfortable around you. They are then more likely to consider you a friend and open up to you.

People you meet are also more likely to remember you and recommend you to their friends and coworkers . Because of this, making a good first impression impacts your networking .

This kind of social capital can have far-reaching effects on both your personal and professional life. Other people will spread their good opinions about you.

If the first impression that you create includes competency, this will instill confidence in others of your abilities and skills. They are more likely to trust that you can perform the tasks assigned to you and achieve the goals that have been set .

This can provide you with greater latitude in how you perform your tasks and achieve your goals .

On their own, each of the above is a good example of why first impressions matter. When you combine their effects, a good first impression becomes even more important. Creating a good first impression can generate a lot of personal power.

A good first impression also tends to provide opportunities. Potential customers would be more likely to become actual customers. Referrals through networking can result in new job offers.

And a good first impression can improve our chances of promotion when you’re evenly matched on skills and experience with other applicants.

Now that we’ve covered why first impressions are so important, here are some tips to nail that first meeting.

1. Make eye contact

Eye contact is a nonverbal form of communication . Making eye contact is taken as a show of honesty and as a way of showing respect to the person that you are talking to. Maintaining eye contact also shows that you’re paying attention to the other person and listening to what they are saying .

employees-shaking-hands-how to-make-a-good-first-impression

Try to make eye contact before you start talking, and maintain regular eye contact during your conversation . You do, however, need to know the difference between eye contact and staring someone down.

In her book, How To Talk To Anyone , Leil Lowndes recommends a 60/40 mix , with 60% eye contact being the ideal goal to indicate paying attention without aggression.

A sincere smile puts people at ease and makes people feel welcome.

A genuine smile reaches your eyes and creates an impression of trust and sincerity . If your smile reaches your eyes, it will be seen even if you are wearing a mask.

If you feel a tightening of the muscles around your eyes, you know that your smile shows in your eyes.

3. Dress for the occasion

What you wear greatly contributes to your first impression. Caroline Dunn and Lucette Charette of The National Research Council of Canada found that “ People are affected by your appearance, whether or not they realize it , and whether or not they think appearance is important.”

In short, what you wear has consequences.

Make sure that your clothing is appropriate for the situation. Dressing too casually for a job interview is likely to create the impression that you aren’t serious about the job.

4. Be authentic

People can be remarkably quick to pick up on insincerity, so it pays to be yourself .

Constant worry about whether you are saying or doing the right thing often comes across as insincerity as well.

Being authentic means knowing your strengths and weaknesses and communicating them in a considerate way .

5. Be a good communicator

A good communicator listens more than they talk . A good guideline for this is to talk only a third as much as you listen.

Listening more shows that you are being attentive and lets the other person feel heard.

As founder of First Impressions Ann Demarais points out, people always remember how you made them feel . If you communicate clearly and listen well , people will enjoy their interactions with you.

6. Use positive body language

Body language is a large part of communication. Some basic guidelines for positive body language are:

  • Stand or sit up straight, and hold your head up. You will present yourself as comfortable and confident.
  • Avoid crossing your arms or legs. This subconsciously closes you off from the other person.
  • Offer your hand for a good, firm handshake that is confident but not crushing.

7. Be empathetic

Pay attention to the emotional well-being of the person that you are talking to.

Empathizing with someone can contribute to a strong connection. It demonstrates that you understand them emotionally.

8. Do your research and come prepared

Doing some basic research can help you understand the context and environment that you will be in.

It can help you dress appropriately and guide you to the formality of language that will be suitable. You may also discover information about other people you can use to start a conversation with them.

Preparing beforehand will make you feel more at ease and will also show that you are interested and focused .

9. Act confidently

Acting confident, even if you don’t feel brave , will create an impression of confidence. This appearance of self-assurance will contribute to a better first impression.

Here are some general customs to follow for a first meeting to ensure you make a good impression.

  • Be overbearing. This is often the result of talking too much and not listening enough. This creates the impression that you aren’t interested in the other person or what they have to say.
  • Interrupt when others talk. In many cultures, interrupting someone comes across as very rude. Not only does it communicate that you aren’t really listening, it often upsets the interrupted person.

It also creates the impression that you are more interested in hearing yourself speak and value your own opinion more than that of others.

  • Be constantly on your phone. Once in a while, we should all take a digital detox to overcome our device dependence. If you are constantly on your phone, you create the impression that you aren’t paying attention. It also communicates that you aren’t interested in the other person.
  • Try too hard. Trying too hard is often obvious and makes you seem insincere. It can create the sense that you are prepared to do almost anything to create a good impression, even if that means overstating your abilities.
  • Read the room. Taking a moment to read a room gives you time to gather yourself. It can also guide your behavior by providing contextual information about levels of formality and language style.
  • Use different types of listening. Understanding and using the different types of listening enable you to communicate more effectively.

Other people will pick up on whether you are an effective listener or not. This will contribute to their impression of you.

  • Be optimistic. Being optimistic will contribute to a positive atmosphere. People enjoy being around optimists. A sense of cheerfulness will have a positive effect on the impression that you create.
  • Ask open and closed questions. Asking open questions shows that you’re interested and attentive. Asking closed questions shows that you focus on what’s important.

Here are some ideas for questions you can ask:

  • What led you to this career?
  • What’s the most exciting part of your job and why?
  • What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?
  • Who inspires you?
  • Where did you work before this position?
  • Do you have any hobbies?
  • What’s your favorite thing to do on the weekends?
  • What’s something you’re proud of?

By asking a mix of open and closed questions, you show others that you have these skills, which builds a positive first impression.

Overcoming a bad first impression can sometimes seem like an almost impossible task.

It just takes consistent effort and time. Below are some guidelines to get you started in overcoming a bad first impression.

Accept the bad first impression and identify where you went wrong

Only by accepting the bad first impression can you begin to identify where you went wrong.

Self-awareness will help you identify what you need to do differently and why. Once you have identified where you went wrong (or what went wrong), you can take corrective action.

Admit your mistake and apologize if necessary

Admitting your mistake to yourself can often be the hardest part. But after that, admitting your error to others is easier.

Important to remember is that just because you made a bad first impression, it doesn’t mean it was always you or your fault. What is important is being able to identify what went wrong, not beat yourself up over it.

friendly-businessman-greeting-his-colleague-how-to-make-a-good-first-impression

Apologizing for your mistake (if necessary) shows that you are aware and interested in improving the person’s first impression of you. An apology can go a long way to overcoming a bad first impression.

Focus on the future

Don’t dwell on the bad first impression. Once you have accepted and admitted it, focus on the actions you are going to take to improve the first impression.

Dwelling on the bad first impression will only make it harder for you to recover from it.

Be consistent with your positive actions

It’s important to be consistent with your positive actions. Your consistency will show sincerity.

You also need to be consistent because, unfortunately, any lapse in your positive actions will reinforce the bad first impression.

Make your first impression count

A good first impression can provide many benefits. It offers you advantages, both short and long term, in your personal and professional life.

The guidelines above can set you on the path to mastering the art of creating a good first impression. With attention to detail and practice, you can create an impression that lasts. For all the right reasons.

Starting a coaching business can be an incredible venture for those with the expertise and passion to help others realize their potential.

When I first started my coaching business, I felt a mix of exhilaration and uncertainty. I was so excited to help motivated leaders and businesses achieve their goals, but I didn’t know the best business model or how to get clients.

Whether you’re aspiring to support individuals or businesses, there are vital steps you should consider to ensure success.

In this article, I’ll share with you the essentials of how to start a coaching business, from qualifications and skills to business models and marketing plans. Let’s get started.

Table of Contents

How to Pick a Coaching Business Name

Are any qualifications required to be a business coach, what skills do you need to have, how should you charge for coaching, marketing your coaching business, coaching business models.

Your business name should reflect your services and be easy to remember. It’s wise to check with the U.S. Patent And Trademarks Office for trademarks to avoid legal complications. My first business name was Live Not Loathe . I wanted to represent the transformation that my clients would go through when working with me. Many people I encountered didn’t know what ‘Loathe’ meant, but I used that as a conversation starter.

As I added more services outside personal development, such as business coaching, my original name didn’t reflect the new suite of services, so I knew it was time for a rebrand. I ran a survey through my email group and social media platforms that listed four options. BrightMind Consulting Group won by a wide margin because the voters felt it represented the light that turned on for my clients in life and business.

Our tagline is “Illuminate Your Path To Success.” Although it doesn’t include coaching in the name, it has worked wonders from a branding perspective because it’s an interesting name, and my prospective clients can deduce how I can help them before they ever speak with my sales team.

Don’t Skip: Consultant vs Contractor – How Should I Market Myself?

In theory, anyone can call themselves a business coach. However, holding relevant certifications from respected organizations such as the International Coaching Federation can provide you with credibility.

Given that you’re essentially selling trust, certifications can be invaluable. Moreover, having a solid educational background or industry experience can differentiate you from the competition.

Communication Skills

Your ability to articulate ideas, strategies, and feedback clearly can make or break your coaching relationship. On the flip side, being a good listener is equally crucial. Clients often need a safe space to express their thoughts, fears, and aspirations. By actively listening, you can identify their true needs and obstacles, thus offering more targeted and impactful advice.

Strategic Thinking

Coaching isn’t just about lending a sympathetic ear; it’s also about solving problems. You’ll need to analyze complex situations and provide actionable solutions quickly.

Understanding your client’s emotions and viewpoints is crucial for fostering a trusting and fruitful relationship. Empathy allows you to tap into the emotional nuances that drive your client’s behavior and decisions. Sourcing from your experience can help build empathy with a client.

For example, if you built and sold a marketing agency, you’re going to understand what a coaching client that runs an agency is feeling.

Confidentiality

In any coaching relationship, clients will share sensitive personal or business information with you. Whether it’s financial woes, personal struggles, or insider business information, maintaining confidentiality is ethical and critical for trust.

If you tend to dish gossip at your Chamber of Commerce happy hours, building a coaching business is going to be difficult.

Resilience and Adaptability

The coaching industry is intensely competitive and constantly evolving. New methodologies, tools, and even competitors are constantly entering the field. Being resilient means you won’t be easily discouraged by setbacks, losing clients, or facing business challenges.

Adaptability is the flip side of this coin, enabling you to navigate change effectively. Whether adapting your coaching techniques to suit a client’s needs better or revising your business strategy in light of new industry trends, resilience and adaptability are vital for long-term success.

Build your business button

Setting your rates can be tricky. Market research can give you an idea of the going rates in your area. Different pricing strategies include:

Per session

Most coaches using this pricing structure charge between $100 and $500 per hour when they start.

Per package

When charging per package, think about how much you want to make in the timeframe of the client engagement and the perceived value of the results you offer. For example, a three-month coaching package with 12 sessions for $3,000 would not benefit you if the expectation is to help the client reach a million in sales. But, it may be fair value to both parties if you’re a new coach helping them with difficult conversations with their investors.

Getting paid a retainer, the same fee every month, is an easy way to predict your income. The problem with a retainer fee is that the value can skew either way. The cost may become too low if you don’t cap how much the client can contact and work with you. Conversely, if the client doesn’t feel they are getting value from your services, you may lose them.

Value-based

This method involves having a conversation with a prospect and learning more about the result they want. It can be challenging to price your services using this method, but it also allows for more pricing flexibility based on perceived value by the client. For example, a client making $1 million with your services may be OK with paying you $100,000 for an engagement.

The key is to offer enough value to justify your fees. Feel free to test the method that works for you or use a combination of pricing strategies when you start.

Client Capacity

This is a function of your time and energy. Overloading can lead to decreased quality of service. A reasonable start would be around 5-10 clients, scaling as you become more comfortable and efficient.

My first breakthrough came from a Facebook group I created to attract potential clients. In this online community, I went live twice a week, discussing topics that ranged from overcoming adversity to effective leadership. After three weeks of this consistent engagement, I received a direct message from a group member inquiring about my services. That conversation materialized into a $5,000 contract for 12 coaching sessions. Other clients quickly followed suit, especially after my first client shared a glowing review within the group.

My early success lulled me into a false sense of security. I made the critical mistake of assuming that the referrals would automatically start rolling in, negating the need for further marketing efforts.

This oversight cost me both time and potential income.

Only when I revisited and refined my marketing strategies did I see sustainable growth in my business. What you will find in the following section are marketing strategies that have been instrumental in maturing my business. I strongly urge you to integrate these tactics into your strategy to sidestep the pitfalls that once hindered my progress.

Why Trust is the #1 Indicator for Success | Garie Dooley

I prefer to use what I call O.P.P. “Other People’s Platforms” and networking to promote my services.

Speaking Engagements

When you’re first starting, your best opportunities for speaking engagements are with professional associations and your local chamber of commerce. Find places where your ideal client will be and reach out to the event coordinators with a presentation that would be valuable to their members. You’ll be surprised how quickly this could help your business grow.

Being a podcast guest is a long-game strategy, but it helps with credibility and brand visibility. You can use sites like podcastguests.com and matchmaker.fm to get booked. Be sure to ask the host to provide a link to your website to help with SEO.

Guest Posting

Similar to how I write for Foundr, identify blogs and writing opportunities your ideal client would read. Content on other reputable sites will build validity and trust for your brand and also help with SEO. A quick Google search will produce several articles on pitching editors and finding guest blogging opportunities.

Social Media

Focus on using one platform at the start. Being a leadership coach and business consultant, I focus primarily on LinkedIn. You’ll have to choose the platform your ideal client frequents and fits your business goals.

Attend events that have attendees that fit your ideal partner profile or client profile. Partners will help you with referrals, and satisfied clients won’t hesitate to refer their network.

The Best Marketing Channel Isn't What You Think | Amy Porterfield

  • One-on-One Coaching: Personalized but time-intensive. You work with clients directly to solve their specific problems.
  • Group Coaching: Less personalized but leverages your time. You can coach multiple clients simultaneously, typically at a lower price point per client.
  • Online Courses: Offers a passive income stream but requires an upfront time investment for content creation. Plus, there’s extra marketing involved to get the courses in front of your ideal audience.
  • Consulting: You are doing more of the work to create a strategy to achieve a result than traditional coaching.
  • Membership Programs : A membership model offers exclusive content, resources, and limited consultation for a recurring fee. This can provide you with more predictable income and foster a sense of community among members who can learn from one another.
  • Live Events: Workshops, seminars, or retreats can be powerful experiences that bring a more dynamic, interactive approach to your coaching. These events can be lucrative and offer a more tangible sense of connection, transformation, and immediacy than digital formats.
