In print, the books are less expensive than books published by traditional textbook publishers. Betty A. Prashker, 99, Who Pushed Boundaries in Book Publishing, Dies

A top editor and executive at two publishing houses, she was an advocate for women in publishing, and for equal pay in an industry that had long been male-dominated.

Betty A. Prashker, a pioneering woman in the book business who published the feminist classics “Sexual Politics” by Kate Millett and “Backlash” by Susan Faludi, but who also brought out racy commercial fiction by Judith Krantz and Jean M. Auel — viewing their frank female sexuality as no less a statement of feminist empowerment — died on July 30 in Alford, Mass. She was 99.

Her death, at the home of a daughter, was confirmed by her family.

The list of authors Ms. Prashker discovered, championed or positioned for best-sellerdom as a top editor and executive at two of the leading publishing houses, Doubleday and Crown (now both divisions of Penguin Random House), included plenty of men, too, among them Isaac Asimov, Erik Larson, Dave Barry and Dominick Dunne.

She was a Vassar graduate whose first toehold in publishing, in 1945, as a reader of unsolicited manuscripts for Doubleday, came because men who would otherwise have taken such jobs were still at war. After marrying in 1950, she set her career aside for a decade to raise a family before rebelling at the role of homemaker.

“I suddenly realized I was going insane,” Ms. Prashker was quoted as saying in “The Time of Their Lives,” a 2008 history of publishing by Al Silverman. “I felt my entire life was constricted by when the man was coming to fix the washing machine, and the logistics of getting children here, there and everywhere.”

Returning to the workplace, she was both an early avatar of 1960s feminism and a catalyst of its advance. Doubleday rehired her, and she soon heard of a Columbia graduate student, Ms. Millett , who was working on a writing project.

The US National Book Foundation Issues $350,000 in Hawthornden Grants

The Hawthornden Foundation has made possible these grants going to 49 nonprofit programs serving readers and writers.

‘Capacity-Building’ Grants

The foundation, which is chaired by Open Road Integrated Media CEO David Steinberger , has announced a total of US$350,000 in capacity-building grants to 49 nonprofit literary arts organizations in the States. Selected organizations will receive grants valued at $5,000 to $10,000 to support projects which “build organizational capacity and ensure greater sustainability.”

Drue Heinz had a penchant and gift for buying historic homes—the Hawthornden Castle complex outside Edinburgh among them—and restoring them as writers’ retreats. The Heinz family’s Casa Ecco, as she called the Villa Maresi on Lake Como, became a place for  conversazioni  and one of these retreats, as she cultivated it. She also published  The Paris Review  from 1993 to 2007, co-founded Ecco Press, and funded the  Drue Heinz Literary Prize , which is based at the University of Pittsburgh Press, a competition that honors short fiction.

She also funded the Hawthornden Prize in the United Kingdom, created in 1919 and awarding writers aged 40 and younger for “imaginative literature” in poetry and prose.

Speaking for the Hawthornden on this new example of the foundation’s philanthropic generosity, Ellyn Toscano, Hawthornden’s executive director, is quoted, saying, “We are delighted to support the National Book Foundation in its essential capacity-building program for literary organizations.

“The contributions of the National Book Foundation to the literary arts are incalculable.”

The National Book Foundation uses its grants “to support projects that aim to create a sustainable and effective organization in the areas of fundraising, finance, or marketing; skill-building opportunities for staff and/or board members; strategic planning consultants; diversity and equity initiatives; leadership development and management training; sabbaticals for long-term staff members and leaders; and succession planning.”

For the National Book Foundation, executive director Ruth Dickey says, “The National Book Foundation’s capacity-building grantees represent organizations based in 22 states and Washington, DC, and they have annual budgets that range from under $20,000 to more than $4,000,000/

“We look forward to witnessing all of ways these 49 diverse nonprofit literary arts organizations continue to serve readers and writers nationwide, and are so grateful to the Hawthornden Foundation for their tremendous support of our sector and their investment in the capacity of these critical organizations.”

As a retired secondary English teacher, I read with interest the list of books that the Elizabeth School District is choosing to take off the school shelves. Board member Mary Powell says, “We need to be sure we are protecting our students from things that are controversial.”

Secondary classrooms are a totally appropriate place for discussing controversial subjects. That is what learning is, not protecting students from the real world. Several years ago I taught ninth graders Laurie Halse Anderson’s “Speak,” which addresses teen rape, and we had thoughtful conversations that hopefully protected students from future rapes.

Classrooms offer safe spaces to discuss controversial subjects, and it was an honor to facilitate those conversations.

Former president should respect, not degrade, those who served

Re “Trump: Civilian award ‘much better’ than Medal of Honor,” Aug. 17 news story

I don’t comment publicly about politics, but I feel compelled to respond to Donald Trump’s reported comments about Congressional Medal of Honor recipients. It’s just one more of his repeated derogatory remarks about service members who have served honorably in defending the freedom of our country.

I am a retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant, and I served in the Vietnam War. I’ve been honored to meet several Medal of Honor recipients, one of which was a POW in the Korean War. Service members who earn the highest honor deserve our highest respect. Recognition of heroism and supreme sacrifice should not be diminished to being “second best,” especially by a former President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.

As the saying goes about our commitment to defend our country in time of war, all gave some and some gave all. He should respect that with words of appreciation, not degradation.

New College of Florida library dean placed on administrative leave after book disposal

Shannon Hausinger, New College of Florida's dean of the library, has been placed on administrative leave, a college spokesperson confirmed Monday.

Her departure comes following increased attention to the college's libraries after hundreds of books could be seen overflowing from a dumpster behind the Jane Bancroft Cook Library Thursday afternoon. With the disposing of library books, New College also disposed of materials from the now-defunct Gender and Diversity Center — a student-run and student-curated library of books on subjects such as the LGBTQ+ community, Black stories and women. These books lived across campus at the Hamilton Center, a student-life and dining building.

Details of Hausinger's departure, including reason and length, were unclear as of Monday afternoon. She had been with New College since February of 2024, according to her LinkedIn profile.

New College of Florida spokesperson Nathan March said Hausinger's leave was "taken after discovering that the library did not follow all of the state administrative requirements while conducting the routine disposition of materials."

It's unclear the specific state requirements were not met, but New College's original statement from Thursday referenced Florida Statute 273 as reason it could not donate books instead of throwing them away.

However, F.S. 273 states the college could donate or sell surplus books.

Videos and images from Thursday afternoon's book disposal have circulated the internet and garnered millions of impressions , causing national outlets such as Axios and ABC News to write stories.

In a statement sent Monday afternoon to the college's students, faculty and staff, New College President Richard Corcoran acknowledged the public's frustration and concern surrounding the book disposal situation and criticized media reporting on it.

"Unfortunately, much of the coverage has been sensationalized, catering to the narratives of our critics," Corcoran wrote. "While the optics of seeing thousands of books in a dumpster are far from ideal, it is important to understand that the disposition of materials is a necessary process in libraries, and ensures that our collection remains relevant, up-to-date, and in good condition for our community’s use."

What do book publishers do?

Sure, a book publisher prints and sells your book. But what they do behind the scenes encompasses much more than that. Publishers handle the entire publishing process for books, including: 

• Editing the book, i.e. developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading; 
• Designing the book, i.e. book cover design and any necessary interior book design;
• Promotion and marketing, i.e. writing the book’s blurb, email marketing , setting up media interviews, etc.; and
• Production and distribution, i.e. formatting and distributing hardback, paperback, and ebook versions of the book to stores, both online and brick-and-mortar. 

Note that the structure of publishing companies may differ, depending on their size. Bigger book publishers may be made up of publishing houses which may, in turn, be made up of imprints — each of which will have its own brand identity in terms of the type of books it publishes. 

However, regardless of a publisher’s size, the scope of their work shouldn’t change. Once you sign with a publisher, they will do everything that it takes to bring your book to market. 

What are the most prominent book publishing companies?

If we define success by sheer sales volume, then we might point towards the "Big 5" presses and educational publishers (who rake in a LOT of money). Over the past few decades, these giant publishing companies have merged with and acquired most of the mid-sized publishers in the industry. However, a few still remain. Here are today's biggest book publishing companies:

Together, these largest publishers dominate the publishing landscape. Countless beloved books come from their imprints, many of which you’ll find in our directory. 

The rest of the publishing landscape is largely made up of small publishers, or independent publishers. Most big publishers don’t directly accept unsolicited submissions without a literary agent — but smaller publishers do, making them a realistic and worthwhile route to publication.

Congratulations! Now take a moment to thoroughly vet every publisher on your longlist. Scams are a dime a dozen in the publishing industry, and you want to make 100% sure that you’re dealing with a legitimate publishing company. Eric Gitter has recruited indie comic book vets Filip Sablik and Jamie S. Rich, along with comics creator Jeremy Haun, for the new venture.

Producer Eric Gitter has spent many years bringing comic books and graphic novels to the screen, working on movies such as  Extraction, Atomic Blonde and  Scott Pilgrim vs. the  World. Now he’s diving deeper into the genre as the co-founder of a new comic book and graphic novel publisher, teaming up with several independent publishing veterans in the process.

The untitled company will eschew superheroes and lean toward horror, science fiction, crime and fantasy. The company did not disclose funding nor did it unveil a slate, although it hopes to lock up creators by the end of the year or early next. Its goal is to begin putting out books sometime in 2025.

Working off of Gitter’s background in Hollywood, the company will have one eye on screen adaptations. Gitter previously headed up the screen division of Oni Press and earned producer credits on adaptations such as Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and the Chris Hemsworth Extraction action movies, the latter which were based on the publisher’s Cuidad graphic novel. Gitter has been running his own production outfit in recent years and the shingle will be folded into the new company.

The launch comes amid a disruption in the comic book publishing landscape. Sales suffered a significant downturn last year, with one of the few bright spots being licensed fare such as Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . Independent publisher Boom! Studios was acquired by Random House Publishing in the spring, while indie outfit AfterShock filed for bankruptcy in December 2022 and IDW suffered layoffs this year.   

Still, the partners believe that by the time their books come to market, readers and retailers will be ready for a change.

Sablik is a publishing industry executive with nearly 25 years experience in distribution, editorial, marketing, sales, business development, and operations. With prior stints at Diamond Comic Distributors and Top Cow, Sablik was most recently Boom!’s president of publishing and marketing, a position he held for 12 years. Sablik was a key member of the leadership team that grew the indie into a prominent publisher leading up to its acquisition by Random House. Boom! tripled its market share during his tenure. The exec is credited with using Kickstarter to launch comics, notably Brzrkr , the Keanu Reeves-created title about an immortal warrior. The book became one of the biggest indie hits of the decade.   

Rich is an award-winning editor, author, and comic publishing executive with 30 years experience. Part of that includes acting as group editor of Batman and Justice League comics for DC and the head of its Vertigo/DC’s Young Animal imprint. He also held roles at Dark Horse Comics, Oni Press and Tapas Media, holding the editor-in-chief position at the last two. Most recently, he served as editor-in-chief at IDW, leading the editorial team through a critical restructuring period. He departed on the heels of revitalizing the TMNT line of books and was instrumental in launching Patrick Horvath’s original comic Beneath The Trees Where Nobody Sees , a critical and commercial hit.

The new company will be repped by WME and attorneys Fred Goodman and Rich Marin of Marin Goodman.

Chemistry Education Research and Practice

Metacognitive problem solving: exploration of students’ perspectives through the lens of multi-dimensional engagement.

Solving chemical problems entails content knowledge and mastery of problem-solving processes. However, students sometimes lack metacognitive processes required for problem solving in chemistry. This study investigated how first-year chemistry students engaged with the metacognitive problem-solving scaffold Goldilocks Help. Data was collected from an activity, which involved students reflectively comparing their problem-solving attempts to an expert solution. These comparative reflections (N = 373) were thematically analysed to investigate scaffold engagement in three dimensions: cognitive, emotional, and behavioural. Finding showed that scaffold use, coupled with self-reflection, allowed students to identify flaws in their solutions that were either problem specific or related to their problem-solving skills. Students were able to propose improvement strategies, such as posing prompting questions to themselves and finding multiple alternatives for evaluating an answer. Students, who initially lacked structured problem-solving skills, found that scaffolding helped them to slow down metacognitive processes that would otherwise be rushed through or engaged with on a surface level. Students’ resistance to the scaffold was due to fear of making a mistake or viewing the scaffold as requiring extra time and effort. Within a semester, many students demonstrated an improvement in successful and structured problem solving but some required more practice to internalise the scaffold. Our findings also indicated that students’ reflections on problem solving became more sophisticated as a result of continued exposure to the scaffold and iterative opportunities to compare their work to expert solutions, to self-assess, and to reflect. Further research on reflective writing in chemistry education should focus on the ipsative nature of such assessments, i.e. processes focussing on students’ own progress, growth, and improvement, compared to their previous performance, while recognising the power relations operationalised in course-embedded reflections. From the teaching practice perspective, having an awareness of students’ thoughts, emotions, and actions can help instructors differentiate between levels of student capabilities, mindsets, and needs for extra support, allowing teaching efforts to be directed at promoting metacognitive and structured problem solving.
