Essay on Healthy Lifestyle

The top secret of being physically fit is adopting a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, taking good care of self, healthy sleep habits, and having a physically active daily routine. Lifestyle is the most prevailing factor that affects one’s fitness level. A person leading a sedentary lifestyle has a low fitness level whereas living a healthier life not only makes a person fit but also extends life. Good health has a direct impact on our personality. A person with a good and healthy lifestyle is generally more confident, self-assured, sociable, and energetic.

A good and healthy lifestyle allows one to relish and savor all the pleasures in life without any complications. Even all the wealth is less valuable when compared to sound health. Having all the luxuries in the world does not fulfill its purpose when one is continuously ill, depressed, or suffering from a significant health complication. A healthy person has a clear and calm perception of everything without prejudice. His actions and decisions are more practical and logical and are hence more successful in life.

A good habit is a key factor for a healthy lifestyle. To maintain a stable body and mind, one needs to inculcate good habits. Waking up early in the morning, regularly exercising or a good morning walk helps to keep our body energetic and refresh our mind. Maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet throughout the day is vital for maintaining a good lifestyle. Too much indulgence in alcohol or smoking excessively is not at all appropriate for a healthy lifestyle.

Self-Discipline

Self-discipline is important for maintaining a good lifestyle. When we are self-disciplined then we are more organized and regular in maintaining good health. A disciplined life is a regulated life. A man without discipline is a ship without a rudder. Discipline needs self-control. One who cannot control himself can seldom control others. The level of discipline and perseverance largely determines a person’s success. Self-discipline is the act of disciplining one’s own feelings, desires, etc. especially with the intention of improving oneself. It strengthens our willpower. The stronger our will power the positive will be our decision. It enables us to conquer our own self.

Punctuality

Punctuality is the habit of doing things on time. It is the characteristic of every successful person and everyone must observe punctuality in order to win success in life. Punctuality is necessary for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It should become a habit with us. A punctual person is able to fulfill all his responsibilities and hence is treated with respect in society. It is needed in every walk of life.

Diet is an important component for overall fitness and works best in combination with exercise. A balanced diet and exercise regularly help to maintain good health. It is necessary to reduce weight if one is overweight or obese, failing which one cannot be physically fit for long. For people with obesity, more exercise and a strict regime are necessary, preferably under guidance. There are many ways of making the diet healthier.

Use less sugar and salt while cooking food.

Use less oil while cooking. Avoid deep-frying as much as possible.

Eat more fruits daily. They provide more vitamins and minerals to our bodies.

Add sprouts of gram and moong dal to at least one meal in a day. Add fiber to your diet. Use whole grains instead of polished cereals. Eat lots of salad and yogurt.

Eat fermented food regularly. Fermented food contains many useful bacteria that help in the process of digestion.

Prevention of Lifestyle Diseases

By adopting a healthy lifestyle one can avoid lifestyle diseases. The following are some ways in which we can prevent lifestyle diseases.

Eat a balanced diet that contains important nutrients. One must include more fresh fruits and green vegetables in the diet. Refrain from eating junk food. Stay away from foods that contain large amounts of salt or sugar.

Exercise regularly. Spend more time outdoors and do activities such as walking, running, swimming, and cycling.

One must avoid overindulgence in alcohol, junk food, smoking, and addiction to drugs and medicines.

Avoid spending too much on modern gadgets like mobile phones, laptops, televisions, etc. Spend time on these gadgets for short intervals of time only.

Set a healthy sleeping routine for every day. Waking early in the morning and going to bed early at night should be a daily habit. Lead an active life.

Unhealthy Lifestyle

Bad food habits and an unhealthy lifestyle such as less or no physical activity may lead to several diseases like obesity, high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, anemia, and various heart diseases. An unhealthy lifestyle reduces productivity and creativity in a person. It also adversely affects moods and relationships. It leads to depression and anxiety in human beings.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle not only makes a person confident and productive but also drives him to success. A person with a healthy lifestyle will enjoy both personal and social life.

Having a healthy lifestyle is all about choosing to live your life in the most healthy way possible. There are a few things you have to do to start living your life in this way, i.e., the healthy way. This means doing some amount of exercise daily, such as jogging, yoga, playing sports, etc. Adding to this, you must also have a balanced and nutritional diet with all the food groups. It would be best if you were taking the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fats to help you have a proper diet. Grouped with these two essential aspects (diet and exercise), a healthy person also maintains the same sleep cycle, which should consist of around 7-8 hours of sleep.

However, we must remember that a healthy lifestyle not only refers to our physical and mental health. Maintaining a balanced diet, exercising daily, and sleeping well are essential parts of a healthy lifestyle. But feeling happy is also a big part of a healthy lifestyle. Thus we must do our best to think positively so that we can feel happy rather than sad.

We have talked about what all entails a healthy life, so now we must speak of what all does not. There are several things that one must avoid in order to live a healthy lifestyle. Other unhealthy practices include skipping meals and eating junk food.

The benefits of a healthy lifestyle are manifold: living a healthy life allows you to live longer, which means that you get to spend more time with your family. Exercising daily will enable you to release endorphins and helps you feel happier. Regular exercise also improves the health of your skin and hair, bettering your appearance as well. Healthy lifestyles also primarily reduce your risk of life-threatening diseases such as cancer, diabetes, etc. and also reduce your susceptibility to cardiac arrests.

Healthy Lifestyle and Eating Essay

Healthy eating is the process of keeping the body clean, strong, and healthy at all times (Allen, 1926). Healthy living, on the other hand, means that one should be able to eat the right food, get enough exercise, and maintain cleanliness (James, 1907). Unfortunately, many people do not keep track of these requirements. Thus, they end up with serious health problems, which can be difficult to treat. Prevention of these problems can be accomplished through maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Such a lifestyle is achievable by eating the right food and adhering to all the requirements of healthy living.

The human body needs a balanced diet, which includes enough minerals, fats, vitamins, fiber, and carbohydrates (Albrecht, 1932). These substances are required by the body to facilitate the growth and functioning of body tissues. Low energy foods such as vegetables and fruits have small amounts of calories per unit volume of food. Therefore, it is advisable to eat this combination of foods in large volumes as it contains fewer calories, but has nutrients that are essential for optimal body functionality. Incidentally, one should take food that is free from unhealthy fats, but should ensure that whole grains and proteins go alongside fruits and vegetables.

Apart from choosing the best foods for the body, it is also advisable that people should maintain moderate quantities of food intake. For instance, it is prudent to eat less of unhealthy foods such as refined sugar and saturated fats and more of healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits. This pattern of eating has massive health benefits to its adherents. As such, people should strive to develop good eating habits that can sustain them throughout their lives.

Further, it is recommended that one should eat a heavy breakfast an hour after waking up. The breakfast needs to consist of carbohydrates, healthy fats, and proteins in balanced proportions. It should then be followed by light meals throughout the day. This requirement is important since breakfast helps to initiate the body’s metabolism. The light and healthy meals thereafter help maintain a high body energy level that keeps one active throughout the day (Allen, 1926). People should avoid eating late at night. Early dinners are advisable followed by an average of 15 hours of no food until breakfast time the next morning. Past studies show that this pattern helps regulate body weight (James, 1907).

People who are diagnosed with lifestyle diseases such as anemia, high blood pressure, and diabetes among others are advised to follow diets that are rich in fruits and vegetable content (Allen, 1926). Depending on the stage of illness, such people should strictly watch what they eat. For example, high blood pressure patients should cut down on sodium, which is mainly found in salt. They should also avoid foods that have high cholesterol and saturated fats since diets of this sort prompt a high risk of artery clogging. Consequently, it increases the risk of heart attacks and blood vessel diseases (Albrecht, 1932). Further, they need to control the amount of carbohydrates they take.

Carbohydrates should only account for 50% of their daily calories (Allen, 1926). Finally, they are discouraged from foods with a high phosphorous content since they may lead to bone diseases (Allen, 1926). Overweight people constitute another special needs group. They should reduce weight to be healthy. Consequently, they need at least 30 minutes of rigorous physical exercise everyday and a lean diet.

In conclusion, all these groups of people should increase their water intake. Water is essential in the human body since it facilitates the regulation of all body functions. As such, it enhances body health. In this regard, people should strive to take at least eight glasses per day. Apparently, healthy living calls for discipline and commitment. If people foster these two values in the lifestyles, the world will be full of healthy people.

A Guide to a Healthy Lifestyle

  • Download PDF Copy

Clare Knight, B.Sc.

In the simplest terms, a healthy lifestyle is a way of living that reduces your risk of becoming seriously ill or reduces your life expectancy. Although we cannot prevent all diseases, many serious illnesses can be prevented by adopting certain types of behavior and avoiding others.

healthy lifestyle

Non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, yet they are conclusively linked to lifestyle factors such as obesity, physical activity, smoking and poor diet. Heart disease, stroke and lung cancer together account for one-third of all deaths annually in high-income countries, with tobacco use cited as the greatest self-imposed risk to health.

One recent large meta-analysis showed that individuals who adopted an unhealthy lifestyle, including smoking, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, and unhealthy diet, had a 66% higher risk of mortality than those who adopted at least four healthy behaviors.

However, a healthy lifestyle is not only concerned with the avoidance of illness and death. It is also about improving aspects of social, mental and physical well-being in order to enjoy more aspects of life for longer.

What are the essential features of a healthy lifestyle?

One large-scale prospective cohort study conducted in the United States analyzed the health behaviors of approximately 120,000 adults across a thirty-year period. It used this information to understand how lifestyle factors affected lifespan and the risk of death from non-communicable diseases such as heart disease and cancers. They identified five healthy characteristics:

A healthy diet

A healthy diet involves eating a variety of foods in the correct proportions and consuming a calorie intake that allows for the maintenance of healthy body weight. Although this varies for everyone, as a general guide, this should include:

  • At least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day should account for a third of your daily food intake. Evidence has shown that people who meet this requirement are at a lower risk of developing some cancers and heart disease. One meta-analysis found a dose-response relationship between fruit and vegetable intake and disease, with the risk of death from heart disease dropping by 8% per portion of fruit or vegetables consumed daily, up to ten portions, while cancer risk dropped by 3% per portion.
  • Starchy foods, particularly wholegrain varieties which contain more fiber and nutrients than white varieties. Whole grains have been shown to reduce the risk of several cancers, type 2 diabetes and heart disease and promote healthy gut bacteria.
  • Lean proteins, especially fish, eggs, and white meat, are essential for cellular repair and provide a range of vitamins and minerals.
  • Dairy foods and their alternatives, which are a good source of protein and provide calcium.
  • Limited amounts of unsaturated fats.

Physical activity

The World Health Organisation recommends that all adults undertake regular physical activity, including at least thirty minutes of moderate aerobic activity daily, supplemented by at least two weight-bearing activity sessions per week. Being physically fit protects against diseases such as cardiovascular disease, some cancers, diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis and aids in the secondary prevention (i.e., the worsening of symptoms) of such disorders.

Healthy body weight

Maintaining healthy body weight is critical for overall health and protects against numerous diseases. Body mass index (BMI), an estimation of body fat calculated using height and weight, can be a useful indicator of whether body weight is healthy. A normal BMI score ranges between 18.5 and 24.9, a score of 25.0 – 29.9 indicates that an individual is overweight, and a score of 30+ indicates obesity. BMI score is positively correlated with disease risk, with higher scores indicating an increased risk of several diseases, including:

healthy diet

Tobacco use

There is no safe level of tobacco use and smoking behavior. Thus the greatest health outcomes are associated with having never smoked.

Approximately eight million people per year die from smoking-related diseases, with approximately 70% of all lung cancer cases being directly caused by smoking. It also causes cancer in many other areas of the body, including the esophagus, mouth, throat, pancreas, stomach, and liver. Smoking damages the heart tissue and circulation, increasing the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, vascular disease, and myocardial infarction.

Additionally, smoking damages lung tissue, leading to chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and pneumonia and worsening respiratory disorders symptoms.

Moderate alcohol intake

A moderate level of alcohol consumption translates to between one and two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women. Consuming alcohol above these levels increases the risk of poor health outcomes. For example, over-consumption can raise triglycerides in the blood, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. It can also lead to high blood pressure, cardiomyopathy , and cardiac arrhythmia.

Given the role the liver plays in neutralizing toxic substances in the body, it is particularly vulnerable to alcohol. Alcohol-related liver diseases such as fatty liver develop in most individuals who regularly consume excessive levels of alcohol. In serious cases, the cells of the liver become inflamed and die. These are replaced with scar tissue, leading to cirrhosis of the liver, which eventually results in death if untreated.

The Importance of Healthy Lifestyle: Essay Example

  • Introduction

Embracing physical Activity

Quitting smoking, risks associated with smoking, reference list.

In this essay on the importance of healthy lifestyle, you’ll learn more about the benefits of physical activity, quitting smoking, and other aspect of the importance of healthy lifestyle.

The Importance of Healthy Lifestyle: Essay Introduction

A healthy lifestyle is a term that is commonly used by many communication channels but not many people bother to find out its real meaning. It is important to know its significance and ways through which individuals can make lifestyle changes since this can lead to an improvement in the length and the quality of the lives they live.

Several factors make up a healthy lifestyle, physical exercise and diet being the most obvious ones (Gogus, 2011). In addition, learning how to manage stress, getting enough sleep, avoiding smoking and responsible drinking are important towards living a healthy lifestyle.

Parents who make a deliberate effort to live healthy lifestyles make it possible for their children to lead healthy lifestyles too.

There are problems associated with unhealthy lifestyles hence it is mportant for parents to lead by example by educating their children on how to live well, improve their eating habits and the need for exercises (Manger, 2006). In order to lead a healthy lifestyle, I will make two important lifestyle changes that will have positive impact on my short term and long term health.

The first lifestyle change that I will make is to embrace increased physical activity. Regular activity and exercises are important to people of all ages since they maintain good health and well being. Research has revealed that both young and old people can reap numerous benefits from either vigorous or moderate exercises done regularly. Many people struggle with chronic diseases but with exercises, they can be improved significantly.

Active people are likely to live longer than inactive ones since through exercises, they reduce the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and heart diseases.

Despite the fact that majority of people are aware of the benefits associated with physical exercises, they nevertheless lead lives which are relatively sedentary. Sedentary lifestyles are described as lifestyles that are devoid of physical activities carried out during leisure time. Lack of physical activity has been cited as common in both young and old people.

One of the most common health problems that have been claiming many lives across the world is obesity. Physical exercise is important in regulating weight to ensure that it is maintained at a healthy level. It helps an individual to burn calories and the more vigorous the activity is, the higher the amount of calories burnt. This eliminates the problem of wasting a lot of time in an attempt to lose a lot of weight.

This implies that it is important for individuals to monitor their weight. Nutritious diets coupled with physical activity are key ways through which individuals can maintain a healthy weight. It is therefore important for private and public sectors to come together to encourage individuals to embrace physical activity.

For example, schools can initiate walking programs and involve the local communities. As an individual, I need to embrace physical activity since it is good for the body and mind. This should be followed by a constantly active lifestyle.

Lack of physical activity is also associated with increased treatment costs which can be avoided. Physical activity should be done for at least twenty minutes, three times in every week in order to strengthen muscles, improve the structure of the joints and bone health.

As a student, physical activity will be very important since it has a positive impact on mental health. It is associated with increased learning capacity, self esteem and reduction in anxiety and stress. Physical activity is therefore important towards reducing some of the health risks such as obesity which is occasioned by excess weight (Whitman, 2012).

The second lifestyle change that I will make is to quit smoking. This is an addictive habit that is not considered harmful by many people but has adverse health effects. There are more than four hundred known substances in cigarettes which are toxic and harmful to human health. During the burning process, the butt has the highest concentration of the residues.

Some of the most harmful products in cigarettes include tar which leads to cancer, carbon monoxide which is associated with reduced oxygen in the body and nicotine which is addictive and raises the level of cholestrol in the body. The health damage that is associated with smoking is determined by presence or absence of a filter in the cigarette, the process of preparing the tobacco and the quantity of smoked cigarettes.

Researchers have found out that smoking can reduce the life expectancy of an individual by seven or eight years. It is estimated that the life of a smoker is shortened by eleven minutes for every cigarette smoked. For instance, in UK, three hundred people lose their lives on a daily basis as a result of smoking with the highest percentage being young smokers.

It is also evident that more people under seventy years die of diseases related to smoking than those who die of traffic accidents, AIDS and breast cancer. In addition, people who do not smoke live healthier during their old age than those who smoke.

Failure to quit smoking is associated with numerous health risks. Several diseases which pose great risks to the health of a smoker include cardiovascular disease, cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Cardiovascular disease occurs when arteries harden as a result of deposits of cholestrol and other fats that block the arteries making them narrow (Health Effects of Cigarette Smoking, 2012).

The disease takes different forms since different blood vessels may be affected. Smoking also exposes individuals to cancer especially throat cancer, lung cancer and mouth cancer. These types of cancer are not common among non-smokers.

The risk of cancer is increased by the number of cigarettes smoked in a day and the duration an individual has been smoking. The likelihood of smokers developing mouth cancer is four times compared to non-smokers. COPD on the other hand entails numerous conditions that obstruct the flow of air hence making breathing difficult. They include chronic bronchitis and emphysema (Owing, 2005).

Quitting smoking will be beneficial to me as an individual since it will reduce the risk of contracting smoking-related diseases. In addition, my general health will improve since minor health problems such as tiredness and headache may be associated with smoking.

The heart will also not be exposed to a lot of strain hence enabling it to work effectively. Most significantly, smoking will cut down the amount of money that would otherwise be spent on drugs (Sloan, 2004).

When coupled with the benefits of physical activity, the actions towards lifestyle change will be beneficial towards my university work and my chances of success in employment. This is because good health will enable me to concentrate on my studies without distractions caused by diseases. I will also be able to effectively execute my duties at the place of work.
