Charli Edwards of Cavendish Consulting reflects on a world pre-dating social media, as well as why we need it now, in honor of today's Social Media Day.

With social media comes great responsibility, implies LoveThat's Charli Edwards / Samantha Gades

Social media has drastically altered our everyday lives in countless ways, often for the better. We can share photos with far-removed family and friends faster than ever; we have seemingly endless platforms to connect with different audiences worldwide, and it’s easier than ever to glean insights on global events happening thousands of miles away.

Despite the marvels of modern technology, though, is it right to assume that life pre-social media was in some way worse? Are there lessons from history worth retaining today, even as technology advances?

In honor of Social Media Day (June 30th), let’s explore the nuances of a world before social media existed, examine how our current reality compares.

Social media in today's world

From the days of MySpace (shout out to Tom) and Friendster to the current reign of Instagram and TikTok, social media has come a long way. It's taken over much of our lives whether we like to admit it or not. It's where we connect with friends, stay informed on current events, and even make money.

So, how do we balance the enjoyment and enrichment of well-informed social media with the endless doom-scrolling and mindless content or misinformation?

On one hand, it offers a tremendous opportunity for businesses to reach out to target audiences, and enhance brand awareness. Social media can be a cost-effective means of advertising, product promotions, and customer service. It also offers an avenue for individuals to connect with friends, family, and like-minded people – and an opportunity to stay informed about important events and news.

However, social media can also have negative consequences. For businesses, managing their online presence requires significant time and resources, and negative reviews or feedback can impact their reputation.

For individuals, social media can be addictive, and too much screen time can lead to mental health issues. Studies have shown that excessive social media use can lead to feelings of anxiety, depression, and isolation. It can also create a false sense of comparison and competition as we compare ourselves to the curated versions of ourselves that others choose to share online.

Explore frequently asked questions

Fun for all ages.

Each generation has their own way of using social media. If we apply the logic of how social media can illicit stereotyping, you could assume certain age-specific habits (millennials posting about their avocado toast and selfies; gen Xers sharing articles about politics and memes about wine; baby-boomers using social media to keep in touch with family and share photos of their latest cruise vacation).

But seeing how each generation interacts through a curated lens is fascinating but lopsided and sometimes damaging.

While many use it for personal connections and productivity, it can also have harmful consequences if not handled with care. Excessive use of social media can lead to decreased productivity and increased stress levels, and the spread of fake news and misinformation can damage our perceptions of reality.

But (and it’s a big but), social media can also be a powerful tool for positive change when used correctly. It can promote awareness and activism, encourage creativity, and connect with people worldwide.

Despite its challenges, social media is part of our lives and provides many opportunities. Whether you are a business looking to extend your reach or a young adult exploring the world, we need to understand how different generations use social media and make data-driven decisions to get ahead. For individuals, it's essential to know why engaging with social media can positively and negatively impact your psychological well-being and relationships.

Shifting our approach

To claim that the world without social media was inherently better than our current reality would be wrong; social media has undoubtedly brought numerous benefits: facilitating global connections, enabling information sharing, and providing platforms for creativity and activism.

But it’s no angel. It's crucial to recognize the potential pitfalls of excessive use. Like any tool, social media's impact depends on how we wield it. By using social media wisely, being mindful of its effects, and harnessing its potential for positive change, we can navigate the digital landscape and maximize its opportunities.

Rather than lamenting a world without social media, we should strive to adapt and find the balance that allows us to benefit from its advantages, while mitigating its downsides.

What Would the World Be Like Without Social Media?

ChMaille

Have you ever wondered what the world would be like without social media?   In reality, you already know because you’ve experienced it. Indeed, as you’re no doubt probably aware, there were several occasions recently that large technology companies such as Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp went down for several hours. This experience wasn’t positive for a large part of the population.

Imagining a world without these resources will seem apocalyptic for some and paradise for others. However, what can’t be denied is that we can no longer think of a life without these tools that, for better or for worse, have changed our lives. It’d be hard for us to go back to those tranquil years of the 80s or 90s when influencers didn’t exist and, to stay informed, we bought newspapers or listened to radio or television.

However, just for a moment, imagine what it’d be like. Think of your life without Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, or Pinterest.

If there were no social networks, you’d probably be far less distracted and more productive.

Possible scenarios

In a world without social media, the first thing you’d probably feel would be strange sensations of emptiness and silence . It’s difficult to say whether this would be ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but it’d certainly be ‘different’. Society would revert to being not so connected. The information wouldn’t flow so quickly and there’d be no channels for you to express yourself so easily.

In that kind of universe, many of us would be rather different. In fact, only those who’ve already experienced a world without networks and without the Internet would quickly adapt. On the other hand, young people would have to face what amounts to existential and identity trauma. However, they’d adapt. Because, at the end of the day, if there’s one thing that defines the human being, it’s adaptation.

Just for a moment, imagine what your reality would be like in which you use your cell phone for what it was originally designed: making phone calls.

1. You’d have to go out more to meet people

Social networks allow you to meet countless people without having to leave home. They provide a fast and convenient way of connecting with other people with the same hobbies and interests as you. If you didn’t have these resources, you’d have no other option than to leave your house more often.

It’d also be harder to find partners.  Indeed, according to a Harvard University study , social media has had a profound influence on romantic relationships in recent decades. Undoubtedly, without this resource, things would be rather more difficult.

In a world without social networks, you’d have to be more direct with the people you want to get to know. You’d no longer be able to ‘like’ their online posts to break the ice.

2. It’d take longer to find out about things (or you wouldn’t get to know them at all)

Currently, you can find out what’s happening anywhere in the world just by taking a look at your mobile. The news updates every second. Therefore, there’s no need to wait for the 9 pm news or the morning newspaper. Indeed, social networks are the mirror of immediacy and the reflection of a hyper-connected planet.

Without this resource, society would be less informed and less sensitive to the realities beyond our close surroundings.

3. Letters, postcards, and magazines would become fashionable again

Can you imagine a day without graphic images? With no social networks, there’d be no more daily photos. You wouldn’t see daily selfies from friends and family. You’d no longer watch your favorite Instagrammers showing you their breakfasts, their gym sessions, or their journeys of a lifetime.

As a matter of fact, you’d have no option but to return to magazines to entertain yourself and read about those topics you’re passionate about. You’d also have to rely on letters and postcards to hear from those who live far away.

4. No more ‘likes’

‘Likes’ addicts would be forced to deal with withdrawal symptoms. Because in the world of no social networks there’d no longer be the social reinforcements of the ‘likes’. However, neither would there be judging looks and comments, positive or otherwise.

5. You’d no longer have ‘followers’

In fact, followers wouldn’t even exist, except in the cases of cults. You’d also no longer have hundreds of friends whom you’ve never seen , but with whom you interact on a regular basis.

6. You couldn’t gossip about the lives of others

Everyone’s done this at some time or another. You meet someone you like and afterward, immediately investigate their social media. In just over twenty minutes you can find out what their hobbies are, who their friends are, who their previous partners have been, their ideology, the names of their pets, etc.

However, with no social networks, the only way you’d have of finding out about other people would be by physically interacting with them. There’d be no more gossiping about the lives of others or monitoring what others publish in order to deduce what they’re like.

In a world without Instagram or Facebook, your relationships would be shrouded in the most hermetic mystery. You’d be subject to discovering people little by little, without the reference of their online profiles to draw on.

7. You’d look for other channels of expression to make yourself known

In a world without social media, there’d be no Twitter for expressing your opinions or fighting with others. Nor would you have Instagram to publicize your hobbies or interests. Furthermore, you couldn’t start fundraising campaigns, denounce social problems, or make concrete realities visible.

In a reality without these resources, the voices of millions of people would be muffled. Indeed, they’d have to find other more complex means of being heard.

woman in a world without social networks

8. You’d have more time for other things

Perhaps you’re one of those people who can’t live without Wi-Fi and without checking your notifications every five seconds. Or one of those who spend hours every night on Instagram or TikTok. In a world without social networks, you’d suddenly find yourself with all that time you lost using these resources.

You’d read more books. You’d be more connected with real life and not with life online. Maybe your mental health would even improve.

Finally, life without social networks would be very different for the vast majority but the same for those who don’t use them. You’d be forced to remember the birthdays of your friends and family. Furthermore, perhaps mobile phones would no longer even have cameras.

The changes would be infinite, but you’d survive. In fact, as a species, we’ve managed to live without these resources for thousands of years.

Life Without Social Media: Contemplating the Personal and Societal Changes

How it works

To ask Generation Y kids to imagine a world without social media is like asking them to imagine a world without water or air. But when you ask older people the same question, it’s easy for them to answer. You’re basically asking them to imagine a large part of their youth.

  • 1.1 Revisiting the Old Ways of Communication
  • 2 Influencing World Events and Personal Lives
  • 3.1 Works Cited

Life Without Mainstream Platforms

Today, without Facebook, we would lose our normal play area to engage ourselves, chat with friends and break the dullness of life. Without Twitter, how might we know the simple second an outrage surfaces in some random corner of the world; who’s going out with whom and, who got dumped, who’s truly achy to visit the family with seasonal flu?

Revisiting the Old Ways of Communication

In a world without ‘tweetups, ‘ friends would really get together.

In the past, we called up relatives frequently or potentially. This might come as a shock: we really visited them. Indeed, we physically got ourselves off a chair and went to our friend’s homes. Presently, on the off chance that you have to connect with your best friend, why call? Why even text when you can send a Tweet or a DM (coordinate message)? Older schoolers would feel this adds up to executing any genuine human correspondence, though new schoolers would trust they are communicating now like never before.

Influencing World Events and Personal Lives

In a world without Twitter, Trump probably wouldn’t have become president. In a world without Facebook, quirky young men would not stand an opportunity to state ‘hello’ to the pretty girls in their class. In a world without Youtube, we could never have known or watched any of the K-pop videos.

This social network and messaging culture are changing how individuals identify with society, their folks, and their companions. Without it, we wouldn’t have the capacity to create connections in view of normal interests. We would be tied in with experiencing the old-school movements of maintaining connections like developing plants. Without social media, our gathering of friends would potentially be significantly less culturally diverse; however, maybe it would have been a tightly wound local group of friends. Today we are more associated with each other than at any other time in recent memory; however, without social media, incidentally, maybe we’d likewise be significantly less desolate and removed from each other. In a non-virtual world, would there be less emotional separations, mental exhaustion, and tension?

Of course, without social media, wouldn’t efficiency itself be influenced negatively, considering the way that these websites have turned into a major form for making business associations and work contacts, where individuals can connect to thousands in a moment with the additional dash of a human component? Without it, we would be stuck in a stone-age world directing business one telephone call or email at once.

My little cousin, a 15-year-old Facebook gen-young girl, says it enables her to ‘escape’ at some random point in time. It allows her to escape awkward social interactions.

A Final Thought on a World Without Social Media

So do we reason that a world without social media would be much more tricky and socially unstable than the world as it is today? Or, on the other hand, would we have the calm presence of being ourselves instead of playing out a character just like one’s profile? However, we, as a whole, do it impulsively. Will you truly consider this reliance on social media an actual addiction when nearly everybody is snared on to it? I think not.

Regardless of whether we Snapchat or Instagram stalk, it’s fair to state that the unrest of Social media has turned our advancement into another lifestyle. So a world without social media, not considering whether we think it is good or bad, would nonetheless be considered a step back for the world.

Can You Imagine How A World Without Social Media Would Be?

Think Marketing

Have you ever imagined how our life could be without having social media?

We have to admit that ever since social media started to spread, it became an essential part that almost no one can live without. If you were to observe your daily use of social media platforms, you will find out that you are on social media almost all day! It became a part of your daily life, job, and in some certain cases, your job revolves around it.

Even though we all spend most of our time on social media, sometimes we find ourselves needing a break from it.

What if that break went for too long? Or what if social media never existed? Have you ever thought about that?

Many People Would be Unemployed

The world of Social Media had provided many people with many job opportunities; almost most of the people you know are working in a field related to social media in a way or another! Social media gave a chance for people to unleash their creativity.

If social media never existed, people wouldn’t be as creative as now, a lot of talents would be suppressed, and many brands wouldn’t know how to market themselves properly.

Reshaping Mindsets and Spreading Awareness Wouldn’t Exist

We can’t deny that social media reshaped people’s mindset and spread awareness regarding many topics. Some of the society’s harmful traditions had changed due to the awareness that people spread on social media; we understood and we were introduced to many expressions and concepts that we never knew about that helped open our eyes to what’s right and what’s wrong.

If we were living without social media, we would still be living in a place where people are more judgmental and we wouldn’t have given up on our old harmful norms.

We Would still be Living in a Shell

One of the things that social media had done is connecting us to the other side of the world; it is now easy to know what is happening in other countries. Also, it is now easy to get to know people with other nationalities.

We wouldn’t know everything we do now if it wasn’t for social media since it is the one that introduced to other cultures and how they are evolving.

Reading WAY More Books Without Social Media Scrolling

Globally, digital consumers spend an average of 2 hours and 23 minutes per day on social media, according to  GlobalWebIndex ’s Flagship Report for 2019.

You can use the digital monitoring tool developed by Google users to see data on device screen time usage  and Android users can set app time limits. Apple, Facebook and Instagram all offer similar functions.

a world without social media essay

As time is one of our most precious resources, you should have options to choose the kind of activities you’d rather do during those social media time (like read books, do sports, or learn a new language).

According to  Omni Calculator algorithm, cutting out three 10-minute social media checks a day means you could read as many as 30 more books a year.

Would We Find Peace If Social Media Never Existed?

Despite the darkness we would live in if social media didn’t exist, we can’t deny that we would be living in some kind of a peaceful atmosphere. We wouldn’t be exposed to the number of arguments we go through almost every day if social media never existed.

The idea of cyberbullying was created due to the existence of social media since people started bullying others through comments. We wouldn’t be seeing and believing fake news and rumors that can make some people’s life a living hell.

Also, we would have more time for the things we actually love since social media consumes most of our time. If you were to observe your daily behavior, you will find yourself wasting a lot of time being on social media instead of doing your work properly.

We would have more time for our friends, family, and our social life and activities.

We have to admit that it would be peaceful since sometimes you just get this feeling of having a little bit of isolation and “me” times.

This is how a world without social media would be and we have to admit as peaceful as it might be, we would be missing a lot. Therefore, some people take a break every now and then from being on social media and it is a very healthy thing to do.

When browsing celebrities’ photos on their Instagram accounts, their life stories and lifestyles are reflected. Presentation of self is a common practice for social media users around the world. People engage in social media not only for information and communication, but also for social connections with others. The focus of this article is to discuss celebrities’ uses of Instagram as an alternative tool for self-presentation and self-promotion. The data is drawn from qualitative research conducted with nine celebrities who are either actors/actresses, or singers or MCs in Thailand. The research methods include in-depth interviews with the celebrities and a content analyses of their Instagram photos. This article argues that there are two purposes for the celebrities’ uses of Instagram. Firstly, celebrities’ uses of Instagram for self-presentation are found to be in accordance with Erving Goffman’s approach. It was found that celebrities strategically and selectively choose their photos to present their ‘ideal’ rather than ‘authentic’ selves. Secondly, the uses of Instagram for self-promotion and brand endorsements are found to reflect David P. Marshall’s notion of ‘presentational media’. It was found that celebrities use Instagram as an alternative tool for sharing their personal lives and creating public selves beyond traditional media. Celebrities’ public displays of their online selves help them to promote themselves as well as the products they want to sell to their fans and general public. As a result of digital technology revolution and massive growth of smart phone usage, over 66% of world’s population (4.92 billion) is using mobile phones and over half of them are using social media. Mobile social networking (MSN) becomes one of the key communication tool, new trend, necessity and lifestyle. With information transparency, consumer value changes quickly, whilst rapid adaptation of similar offerings in the market place, it is essential for suppliers to keep pace with consumer value changes those directly affect the consumer satisfaction and loyalty. The research applies academic models and frameworks to the real life situation to develop a value proposition in the practical world by considering WeChat (1 billion active users) as the company under study and comparing it with WhatsApp (1.5 billion active users) as the leading competitor in the market. The objectives include identification of customers’ perception of a value for mobile social networking (MSN) services, followed by critical evaluation of existing value proposition of WeChat with Whatsapp to identify gap and finally to propose a new value proposition for WeChat. This paper first identifies customer perceived value (CPV) of mobile social networking (MSN) apps using Overby and Lee’s model (2004) followed by critical review of existing value proposition of WeChat and then comparing and contrasting with the leading player WhatsApp. Frameworks developed by Piercy (2009), Anderson J. et al. (2006) are employed for the same. Finally, the case develops new value proposition for WeChat by using Osterwalder et al 2014 and other frameworks. By the end of this research, a new consumer value proposition (CVP) proposal for WeChat is proposed for consideration in matching with the globally evaluated consumers’ value criteria

Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Communication

Todd L Sandel

Social media encompass web-based programs and user-generated-content that allow people to communicate and collaborate via mobile phones, computers, and other communication technologies. Unlike other media linked to a particular technology, social media are a phenomenon, associated with a set of tools, practices and ideologies for connecting and collaborating. Social media blur distinctions between one-to-many and face-to-face communication. They allow individuals and groups to connect across boundaries of space and time, both synchronously and asynchronously. Afforded by changing technology, social media are ever-expanding as users develop novel uses and creative content. Scholars have studied social media across a range of topics, including such issues as message content and construction, identity formation, relationship development, community development, political activism, disinformation, and cyber threats. Social media vary culturally. For instance, in China social media are impacted by internet censorship, including not only the kinds of apps that are used in China-WeChat and Weibo instead of Facebook and Twitter-but also forms of expression and online activities. While Chinese social media can be a site for political activism, and creative, humorous, and satirical messages, they are constructed in ways that avoid online censorship. Social media also afford the construction and maintenance of local communities and cultural identities. For instance, users with a shared interest, occupation, activity, or offline connection, such as a hometown, may communicate online using a shared language, vocabulary, or code. Hence, unlike mass media that can promote a collective, national identity, social media may facilitate the re-emergence and construction of local and diverse identities. Finally, social media can empower subaltern individuals and groups to mobilize and effect change through collective action. Yet social media, when employed by the state and/or neoliberal corporate powers, can work to suppress subaltern groups by co-opting social media as a technology that affords surveillance. They may also be used to spread misinformation or extremism by both state-sponsored and non-state actors.

a world without social media essay

Many of us spend hours every day tethered to our devices, pawing at the screen to see if it will deliver a few more likes or emails, monitoring the world and honing our online presence. Social networking platforms such as Whatsapp, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are supposed to make us feel more connected. Yet our reliance on technology to “see” the social world around us can be a heavy burden.

The Pew Research Centre recently reported that about a quarter of US adults say they are “almost constantly” online. Stress, addiction, depression and anxiety seem unsurprising consequences of using social platforms often specifically designed to keep us repeating the same actions over and over again.

Even so, many would find the prospect of living offline worrisome, or simply impossible. That’s why we undertook a small study with 50 people who may seem nothing less than social outcasts in today’s screen saturated environment. None of our participants used social media or had a mobile phone, and most even refused to email.

We wanted to understand why these people had decided to switch off, and how they managed it. But rather than seeking quick fixes for overuse, we explored the principles and values that drove our participants to live the way they do. Much has already been written about how we can switch off – but that won’t achieve much, unless we really feel the benefits.

Here’s what our respondents said they’d learned, from living their social lives offline.

1. Spending time with others

Part of the problem with social networking platforms is that we don’t just use them for communicating – they also promote a particular way of being connected to and supportive of those around us. These interactions are channelled through the platform to create data, which is ultimately fed back to data brokers and marketers.

Our participants shared a deep belief in, and attachment to, a different way of socialising that’s focused on expression, touching, talking and being in the same space, physically. For them, this helped to maintain a feeling of human bonding and connection.

a world without social media essay

And while this slower, deeper acknowledgement of others was especially valued by our participants, they also thought it might be valuable to society more broadly. Given the angst-ridden nature of frenetic social networking, we could all benefit from slowing down and taking stock more often.

For many people today, the sense of being “always-on” is generating a desire to achieve greater balance and disengage from the things that are causing them stress. For our participants, who didn’t use smartphones and social media, time with others was associated with a sense of calm and purpose in life.

2. Switching off is not missing out

Our participants questioned what exactly is “social” about social media: what constitutes communication, and what do we get from the way that social stuff is measured on online platforms – whether that’s friendship, support or social contact. Rather than having hundreds of “friends”, they would always choose to see people face to face and nurture relationships that would support them through the tough times.

Taking the opportunity to switch off may, at first, cause some anxiety. But the trick is to realise that switching off is not the same as missing out. When you first switch off, you may spend more time in your own company. But from these moments may come a realisation of how exhausting it is to sustain online connections, and indeed how superficial it is to be locked in endless exchanges of trivial information.

Those who chose to disconnect are neither sad nor excluded. Freed from the screen, they escaped from the overwhelming flows of information and tasks. Their deep sense of connection with the world, and their loved ones, was clear to see.

3. Being, rather than doing

Many of those who switched off enjoyed new-found vitality, because they found time to connect with the world in the here and now. This is crucial to helping us reset and relax , so that we are prepared for more stressful times.

Time spent scrolling through content may feel as though it makes light demands on body and mind. But the visual interference from a bright screen is far from relaxing. You are much less likely to have restful sleep if you share a bed with your smartphone, or surf to sleep .

a world without social media essay

As mindfulness is becoming more popular, its core ideas are often coopted by technology. On Instagram, for example, successful influencers show off their yoga skills and promote spiritual disciplines. Fitness trackers, health data and yoga apps consistently rank among the top apps downloaded by smartphone users.

Our disconnected group told us that we should be more critical of our use of apps and start leaving our phone behind. If mindfulness is a state of being focusing on the present – channelling thoughts, feelings and sensations as they flow through us – then what use is a screen? Constant connection paradoxically results in less free time, and periods when we are able to think without interruption give precious refuge from the demands of daily life.

These disconnected people did not switch off to be “anti-social”. They did so to take charge of when and where they connected with people. They may well be part of a vanguard, leading to new ways of being happier, more rested and, yes, more social.

Ten years from now, we might look back at the emergence of social media as a part of humanity’s growing-up – a time that created social divisions, anxiety and restlessness and which damaged the health and well-being of many. Until then, maybe it’s best to put our smartphones down – or at least switch them off a little more often.

6 Examples of Social Media Essays

Here are 6 examples of Social Media Essays:

The Impact of Social Media on Relationships and Communication

Introduction:.

The way we share information and build relationships has evolved as a direct result of the prevalence of social media in our daily lives. The influence of social media on interpersonal connections and conversation is a hot topic. Although social media has many positive effects, such as bringing people together regardless of physical proximity and making communication quicker and more accessible, it also has a dark side that can affect interpersonal connections and dialogue.

Positive Effects:

Connecting People Across Distances

One of social media's most significant benefits is its ability to connect individuals across long distances. People can use social media platforms to interact and stay in touch with friends and family far away. People can now maintain intimate relationships with those they care about, even when physically separated.

Improved Communication Speed and Efficiency

Additionally, the proliferation of social media sites has accelerated and simplified communication. Thanks to instant messaging, users can have short, timely conversations rather than lengthy ones via email. Furthermore, social media facilitates group communication, such as with classmates or employees, by providing a unified forum for such activities.

Negative Effects:

Decreased Face-to-Face Communication

The decline in in-person interaction is one of social media's most pernicious consequences on interpersonal connections and dialogue. People's reliance on digital communication over in-person contact has increased along with the popularity of social media. Face-to-face interaction has suffered as a result, which has adverse effects on interpersonal relationships and the development of social skills.

Decreased Emotional Intimacy

Another adverse effect of social media on relationships and communication is decreased emotional intimacy. Digital communication lacks the nonverbal cues and facial expressions critical in building emotional connections with others. This can make it more difficult for people to develop close and meaningful relationships, leading to increased loneliness and isolation.

Increased Conflict and Miscommunication

Finally, social media can also lead to increased conflict and miscommunication. The anonymity and distance provided by digital communication can lead to misunderstandings and hurtful comments that might not have been made face-to-face. Additionally, social media can provide a platform for cyberbullying , which can have severe consequences for the victim's mental health and well-being.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the impact of social media on relationships and communication is a complex issue with both positive and negative effects. While social media platforms offer many benefits, such as connecting people across distances and enabling faster and more accessible communication, they also have a dark side that can negatively affect relationships and communication. It is up to individuals to use social media responsibly and to prioritize in-person communication in their relationships and interactions with others.

The Role of Social Media in the Spread of Misinformation and Fake News

Social media has revolutionized the way information is shared and disseminated. However, the ease and speed at which data can be spread on social media also make it a powerful tool for spreading misinformation and fake news. Misinformation and fake news can seriously affect public opinion, influence political decisions, and even cause harm to individuals and communities.

The Pervasiveness of Misinformation and Fake News on Social Media

Misinformation and fake news are prevalent on social media platforms, where they can spread quickly and reach a large audience. This is partly due to the way social media algorithms work, which prioritizes content likely to generate engagement, such as sensational or controversial stories. As a result, false information can spread rapidly and be widely shared before it is fact-checked or debunked.

The Influence of Social Media on Public Opinion

Social media can significantly impact public opinion, as people are likelier to believe the information they see shared by their friends and followers. This can lead to a self-reinforcing cycle, where misinformation and fake news are spread and reinforced, even in the face of evidence to the contrary.

The Challenge of Correcting Misinformation and Fake News

Correcting misinformation and fake news on social media can be a challenging task. This is partly due to the speed at which false information can spread and the difficulty of reaching the same audience exposed to the wrong information in the first place. Additionally, some individuals may be resistant to accepting correction, primarily if the incorrect information supports their beliefs or biases.

In conclusion, the function of social media in disseminating misinformation and fake news is complex and urgent. While social media has revolutionized the sharing of information, it has also made it simpler for false information to propagate and be widely believed. Individuals must be accountable for the information they share and consume, and social media firms must take measures to prevent the spread of disinformation and fake news on their platforms.

The Effects of Social Media on Mental Health and Well-Being

Social media has become an integral part of modern life, with billions of people around the world using platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay connected with others and access information. However, while social media has many benefits, it can also negatively affect mental health and well-being.

Comparison and Low Self-Esteem

One of the key ways that social media can affect mental health is by promoting feelings of comparison and low self-esteem. People often present a curated version of their lives on social media, highlighting their successes and hiding their struggles. This can lead others to compare themselves unfavorably, leading to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem.

Cyberbullying and Online Harassment

Another way that social media can negatively impact mental health is through cyberbullying and online harassment. Social media provides a platform for anonymous individuals to harass and abuse others, leading to feelings of anxiety, fear, and depression.

Social Isolation

Despite its name, social media can also contribute to feelings of isolation. At the same time, people may have many online friends but need more meaningful in-person connections and support. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression.

Addiction and Overuse

Finally, social media can be addictive, leading to overuse and negatively impacting mental health and well-being. People may spend hours each day scrolling through their feeds, neglecting other important areas of their lives, such as work, family, and self-care.

In sum, social media has positive and negative consequences on one's psychological and emotional well-being. Realizing this, and taking measures like reducing one's social media use, reaching out to loved ones for help, and prioritizing one's well-being, are crucial. In addition, it's vital that social media giants take ownership of their platforms and actively encourage excellent mental health and well-being.

The Use of Social Media in Political Activism and Social Movements

Social media has recently become increasingly crucial in political action and social movements. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram have given people new ways to express themselves, organize protests, and raise awareness about social and political issues.

Raising Awareness and Mobilizing Action

One of the most important uses of social media in political activity and social movements has been to raise awareness about important issues and mobilize action. Hashtags such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter, for example, have brought attention to sexual harassment and racial injustice, respectively. Similarly, social media has been used to organize protests and other political actions, allowing people to band together and express themselves on a bigger scale.

Connecting with like-minded individuals

A second method in that social media has been utilized in political activity and social movements is to unite like-minded individuals. Through social media, individuals can join online groups, share knowledge and resources, and work with others to accomplish shared objectives. This has been especially significant for geographically scattered individuals or those without access to traditional means of political organizing.

Challenges and Limitations

As a vehicle for political action and social movements, social media has faced many obstacles and restrictions despite its many advantages. For instance, the propagation of misinformation and fake news on social media can impede attempts to disseminate accurate and reliable information. In addition, social media corporations have been condemned for censorship and insufficient protection of user rights.

In conclusion, social media has emerged as a potent instrument for political activism and social movements, giving voice to previously unheard communities and galvanizing support for change. Social media presents many opportunities for communication and collaboration. Still, users and institutions must be conscious of the risks and limitations of these tools to promote their responsible and productive usage.

The Potential Privacy Concerns Raised by Social Media Use and Data Collection Practices

With billions of users each day on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, social media has ingrained itself into every aspect of our lives. While these platforms offer a straightforward method to communicate with others and exchange information, they also raise significant concerns over data collecting and privacy. This article will examine the possible privacy issues posed by social media use and data-gathering techniques.

Data Collection and Sharing

The gathering and sharing of personal data are significant privacy issues brought up by social media use. Social networking sites gather user data, including details about their relationships, hobbies, and routines. This information is made available to third-party businesses for various uses, such as marketing and advertising. This can lead to serious concerns about who has access to and uses our personal information.

Lack of Control Over Personal Information

The absence of user control over personal information is a significant privacy issue brought up by social media usage. Social media makes it challenging to limit who has access to and how data is utilized once it has been posted. Sensitive information may end up being extensively disseminated and may be used maliciously as a result.

Personalized Marketing

Social media companies utilize the information they gather about users to target them with adverts relevant to their interests and usage patterns. Although this could be useful, it might also cause consumers to worry about their privacy since they might feel that their personal information is being used without their permission. Furthermore, there are issues with the integrity of the data being used to target users and the possibility of prejudice based on individual traits.

Government Surveillance

Using social media might spark worries about government surveillance. There are significant concerns regarding privacy and free expression when governments in some nations utilize social media platforms to follow and monitor residents.

In conclusion, social media use raises significant concerns regarding data collecting and privacy. While these platforms make it easy to interact with people and exchange information, they also gather a lot of personal information, which raises questions about who may access it and how it will be used. Users should be aware of these privacy issues and take precautions to safeguard their personal information, such as exercising caution when choosing what details to disclose on social media and keeping their information sharing with other firms to a minimum.

The Ethical and Privacy Concerns Surrounding Social Media Use And Data Collection

Our use of social media to communicate with loved ones, acquire information, and even conduct business has become a crucial part of our everyday lives. The extensive use of social media does, however, raise some ethical and privacy issues that must be resolved. The influence of social media use and data collecting on user rights, the accountability of social media businesses, and the need for improved regulation are all topics that will be covered in this article.

Effect on Individual Privacy:

Social networking sites gather tons of personal data from their users, including delicate information like search history, location data, and even health data. Each user's detailed profile may be created with this data and sold to advertising or used for other reasons. Concerns regarding the privacy of personal information might arise because social media businesses can use this data to target users with customized adverts.

Additionally, individuals might need to know how much their personal information is being gathered and exploited. Data breaches or the unauthorized sharing of personal information with other parties may result in instances where sensitive information is exposed. Users should be aware of the privacy rules of social media firms and take precautions to secure their data.

Responsibility of Social Media Companies:

Social media firms should ensure that they responsibly and ethically gather and use user information. This entails establishing strong security measures to safeguard sensitive information and ensuring users are informed of what information is being collected and how it is used.

Many social media businesses, nevertheless, have come under fire for not upholding these obligations. For instance, the Cambridge Analytica incident highlighted how Facebook users' personal information was exploited for political objectives without their knowledge. This demonstrates the necessity of social media corporations being held responsible for their deeds and ensuring that they are safeguarding the security and privacy of their users.

Better Regulation Is Needed

There is a need for tighter regulation in this field, given the effect, social media has on individual privacy as well as the obligations of social media firms. The creation of laws and regulations that ensure social media companies are gathering and using user information ethically and responsibly, as well as making sure users are aware of their rights and have the ability to control the information that is being collected about them, are all part of this.

Additionally, legislation should ensure that social media businesses are held responsible for their behavior, for example, by levying fines for data breaches or the unauthorized use of personal data. This will provide social media businesses with a significant incentive to prioritize their users' privacy and security and ensure they are upholding their obligations.

In conclusion, social media has fundamentally changed how we engage and communicate with one another, but this increased convenience also raises several ethical and privacy issues. Essential concerns that need to be addressed include the effect of social media on individual privacy, the accountability of social media businesses, and the requirement for greater regulation to safeguard user rights. We can make everyone's online experience safer and more secure by looking more closely at these issues.

In conclusion, social media is a complex and multifaceted topic that has recently captured the world's attention. With its ever-growing influence on our lives, it's no surprise that it has become a popular subject for students to explore in their writing. Whether you are writing an argumentative essay on the impact of social media on privacy, a persuasive essay on the role of social media in politics, or a descriptive essay on the changes social media has brought to the way we communicate, there are countless angles to approach this subject.

a world without social media essay

A world without Social Media

a world without social media essay

Take a moment and picture your life with no social media.

(While you take into this thought, feel free to continue reading this text albeit it absolutely was possible shared to you on some form of social media platform…)

Without social media, life would inevitably vary. Interacting with someone would have to be in person. It would mean less time surfing on social networks and more time spent in real life. Asking someone to hang out via social networks sounds easier and in case you get rejected you probably will not feel that hurt. However asking someone out in real life makes you feel jittery. Facial expressions are seen, the cracking sound of your voice is heard and the beating rhythm of your heart can be felt. It is always easier to play it off behind the screen than face it out in reality. Using pick-up lines in real life makes the whole conversation awkward, the struggle becomes real when you have to compose a quick witty, flirtatious response and fail to do so within the next 10 seconds before the conversation changes.

Another battle that one faces is trying to sound funny in real life. It is effortless to appear funny through social networks for you may just copy paste jokes from search engines, “retweet” or share hilarious posts or “memes”. Sharing, posting funny jokes or pages through social networks is popular and it works it magic of making people laugh, but making someone laugh in real life is a bit more complicated than it sounds. It does happen sometimes, when you crack a joke and the silence is so absurd that you question your own sense of humour. A joke said in real life demands more precisions, subtlety and timing. Virtually speaking, you can make use of “Emoji” to express your level of euphoria but in real life, it will be seen through your expression and reactions.

Life without social networks means no more daily uploading pictures of you or how your day is being carried out. It equally means no more likes and comments from your Instagram or Facebook profiles. There would be no need for you to make your “feed” look artsy and visually appealing, no more struggling to make your pictures attain the most likes and comments, or for your videos and lives to be most viewed. In real life, the best picture of you is seen and taken with these innovative and all-natural devices called the Human Eyes.

Real life means no more posting on Facebook about how your life seems absurd or how nothing is going right for you. It means no more ranting about how horribly you performed for your exams or how your best friend became your worst enemy. Real life enhances true communication with your parents about how you feel instead of making them appear like monsters by posting false and awful things on Facebook or Twitter. It means going out meeting people and getting to know them through a new different aspect rather than what is portrayed behind the screen. The connection between two individuals automatically becomes stronger and a new type of bond is created.

A world without social media allows you more time to meet and getting to know people. Of course your phone will no longer be the first thing you will look for in the morning or the last thing at night. During hanging out moments, you feel more present without social media because you don’t have to constantly photographs everything, instead you live the moment and enjoy it and you rely on your memory to remind you how memorable it was.

So do we conclude that a world without social networking would be a lot more precarious and socially volatile than the world as it is today? Or alternatively would we have the stress free existence of being ourselves, rather than having to perform a character a.k.a. one’s profile, and in some cases, multiple profiles, on different social networking sites, almost all the time. Yet, we all do it, and compulsively. Can you really call this dependence on social media an addiction when almost everyone is collectively hooked on to it?

Persuasive Essay Examples About Social Media

Are you a student unsure how to write persuasive essays successfully? Well, never fear!

We've got examples of some amazing persuasive essays about social media that will surely give you inspiration. Let’s take a look at a short persuasive essay example:

Social media is a double-edged sword that has both positive and negative impacts on our society. On one hand, it serves as a powerful tool for communication, connectivity, and information dissemination. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram allow people to connect with friends and family, share experiences, and stay updated on current events. This connectivity can foster a sense of community and bridge geographical gaps.

However, the darker side of social media cannot be ignored. The rise of cyberbullying, misinformation, and the addictive nature of these platforms raise concerns about their impact on mental health and societal well-being. The constant comparison fueled by curated online personas can contribute to feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem, especially among the younger demographic.

Moreover, the rapid spread of fake news and misinformation on social media platforms poses a threat to the integrity of public discourse. The echo chamber effect, where users are exposed to information that aligns with their existing beliefs, further polarizes society and hinders constructive dialogue.

Despite these drawbacks, social media has undeniably played a pivotal role in movements for social justice and political change. The Arab Spring and various hashtag movements demonstrate the power of social media in mobilizing communities for positive societal transformations.

In conclusion, the impact of social media on our society is nuanced. While it facilitates communication and connectivity, it also brings forth challenges related to mental health, misinformation, and polarization. The key lies in striking a balance, leveraging the positive aspects while addressing the negative consequences through responsible usage, digital literacy, and regulatory measures. It is crucial for society to harness the potential of social media for collective benefit while mitigating its harmful effects.

These are a few steps you should follow before writing an effective persuasive essay on social media.

Step 1: Decide Your Stance

Imagine a World without Social Media: Good or Bad?

Generally speaking, whenever there is a major technical development that radically affects people’s way of life, it sparks controversy over the essence of such development and as a result, questions if it is right or wrong. Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, YouTube, and Instagram have changed the manner in which we humans obtain information, share ideas and engage with people.  In such a brief period of time, social media has made some really significant impacts on motivating and linking people. So also, it has created an avenue for activities that are clearly unhealthy and damaging.

No matter how beneficial social media might seem, it cannot be a substitute for human connections in a physical world. In order to release hormones that relieve tension and help you feel happy, better, and more optimistic, face-to-face interaction is usually needed. Paradoxically, with apps intended to promote a sense of connection by bringing people closer together, focusing so much time on social media can potentially leave you  feeling more alone and isolated  and can even worsen mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Social media encourages anonymity. It is easier for people to feel free discussing issues and say things as they are when there is a little chance of identification, but anonymity facilitates cyberbullying. This is particularly difficult for adolescents, since bullies often harass and exploit vulnerable high schoolers without taking responsibility.  Stalking could also be a matter of concern, since social media users often share their locations, and their activities can be easily tracked.

Picture this-It has become our reality that these days, you might be in the bus, sitting down on one of the seats and the person sitting beside you is actually glued to their phone screen. You look around and see that some people are on their headphones chatting or texting, scrolling past videos and are basically unaware of what is happening on the bus. Some even miss their destination as a result of this. So, what do we call this? Addiction?  Is social media making us salves to our phones?

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is pexels-roman-odintsov-4555321.jpg

Social media sites are created to hook your interest, keep you scrolling, and have you browsing on your phone constantly. It’s simply how the companies make their profit. Similar to gambling obsession, or addiction to cigarettes, liquor, or narcotics, constant social media use can trigger psychological addiction that can result to  common mental disorders.

The feel-good hormone  generally known as dopamine is released in the brain when we put up posts that gets a lot of likes, shares and pleasant comments. This feel-good hormone is quite similar to the one you feel when for example, you have a piece of chocolate or light a cigarette. Other facets of our lives can be disrupted when we continue to devote a huge amount of time on social media.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is gian-cescon-n0g-deioho4-unsplash.jpg

Social media platforms for example Instagram, encourages comparison. We compare ourselves to other people’s posts or videos and we begin to doubt ourselves as we feel that we are not good or beautiful enough. For some people, viewing other people’s enjoyment and achievements can exacerbate feelings of inferiority and this is quite common with people battling insecurities and low self-esteem. Our self-worth is however drawn from other people’s display but we often forget that people hardly show their ‘behind-the-scenes’ so we probably should be careful of who we idolise.

Today, we have a generation that has been brought up by the internet, social media and modern technologies. So, imagining a world without social media would be quite hard as  it has come to stay . Just like every other aspects of human life, social media no doubt has its pros and cons. What is important is to strike a balance that works for you.

It’s a wonderful draft, Sonia. Looking forward to a more interesting piece…

Yes I agree with you that social media has definitely reduced physical interaction which isn’t so ideal but I guess we all have to learn to deal with it since it has come to stay. Really amazing piece . You are truly a great writer, keep it up!

As you have rightfully stated in this beautiful article, social media has definitely come to stay. You get to experience other people’s lives which can be addictive but this leaves you lacking in your own life. And idle mind leaves you at risk to social media addiction so get busy and live your best life, keeping in mind that people rarely post their failures… know this and know peace.

With Tierry Henry today leaving social media and then John Legends wife deleting her twitter as well. Truth is social media has its great advantages and benefits infact I am wondering what I was really doing without it, but that being said, It is more of a blessing than a curse depending on how we choose to use it.

Lovely write up, Its very important to strike a balance..spending too much time on our phones can even damage the eye…

Social media is more of a blessing or a nightmare depending on how it’s being used

I enjoyed reading this, well done Sonia I agree though that social media in recent times has caused more harm than good but I don’t think there’s a way to regulate social media without eliminating the pros which are quite significant and important. I know I’m one of the addicts so I’ll try to take my eyes off my phone once in a while lol

Beautiful Draft.

This is a beautiful article Sonia. The concept of social media itself is a lot to take in. Yes, it comes with negative and positive impact/influence, I try my best not to get lost in it sometimes because 70% of the time what we are exposed to online are basically false. The ability to self regulate the content we consume online is imperative to our growth physically and spiritually, and also our mental health.

Beautiful article…. Social media can either be a blessing or a curse

Life With or Without Social Media

Introduction, interpersonal communication, quality of experiences, behavioral addiction.

The popularity of various social media has grown rapidly over a few decades. Nowadays, almost every single person has a Facebook or an Instagram account that he or she regularly accesses for various purposes, be that entertainment, stress relief, or socialization. Nevertheless, while social media provide multiple opportunities for communication and promotion of brands, they have multiple drawbacks, including the risk of psychological addiction, and cannot replace real-life relationships. The present paper will discuss the major differences between life with social media and life without them, focusing on the matters of interpersonal communication value, quality of experiences, and behavioral addiction.

One of the main benefits of having a social media page is the ability to have online conversations with people from all over the world. Not only one can quickly and for free connect with new individuals for either personal or professional purposes through Facebook, Twitter, and so forth but also may maintain relationships with friends and acquaintances who live far away. However, online conversations are usually textual and one-dimensional. They neither provide chances for direct exchange of emotions between collocutors nor opportunities for reading various paralinguistic cues, which allow comprehending the meaning of others’ words much better. It can be argued that an individual who does not have social media will seek real-life communication situations much more than those with social media. The latter, in their turn, can often feel satisfied with online conversations without even noticing what they may be missing.

Another significant feature of social media is the possibility to share a personal narrative by posting texts about life experiences, photographs, and pieces of art. It means that such platforms as Facebook and Instagram allow users to express themselves and, in this way, to feel valued and content. However, self-expression through social media may have a negative side. Many individuals post pictures and stories merely to draw attention. Some people visit beautiful places or engage in exciting activities primarily to record them and then share them online to get more likes. It is valid to state that a person living without social media does not face the risks of superficial experiences. Not influenced by online community trends, he or she has a chance to live through unique and rewarding life events fully.

Many social media platforms utilize such reward mechanisms as likes to stimulate users’ activity. Due to those mechanisms, people can become psychologically dependent on social media and striving to do everything to receive more attention. Additionally, some individuals become addicted to social media because they distract from negative emotions and thoughts. While those preferring to spend time offline can have various behavioral dependencies and addictions as well, they are not prone to social media overuse that can substantially interfere with one’s mental state and daily life.

As the comparison of life with social media and life without them demonstrated, the former offers a plethora of opportunities for long-distance connections and self-expression. However, it is associated with the risks of reduced quality of experiences, as well as social media overuse and dependence. At the same time, life without social media is free of potential negative effects of those platforms on a person’s psychological state. However, it is hard to say that one type of life is better than the other. Every individual must find the right balance between the online and the offline worlds.

Former Indian cricket team all-rounder Irfan Pathan took to social media to post an emotional message for his hairstylist Faiyaz Ansari who died after drowning in a swimming pool during their T20 World Cup 2024 trip. Ansari, who was the former cricketer's personal payroll, was accompanying Irfan who was in the Caribbean for his commentary engagements during the T20 World Cup 2024. The incident took place ahead of the Super 8 match between India and Australia. Irfan posted a collage of pictures and videos featuring Ansari and also himself to the tune of "See You Again" on his social media handles.

"“In the past six years, Faiyaz became family to us. My children would run to greet him whenever he came over. He loved me like an elder brother, and I loved him like a younger one. The pain of losing him is indescribable; I've never experienced anything like it. His ever-smiling face and his constant ‘ji bhai' will stay with me forever. I miss you dearly my brother my shadow, Faiyaz," the caption read.

Faiyaz Ansari hailed from Nagina in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh and he started his salon in Mumbai.

According to reports, Ansari's cousin Mohammad Ahmed said that the news left his family completely devastated and Irfan was working on all the formalities to get his body back to India.

Meanwhile, former Indian skipper Sourav Gangul y said Rohit Sharma 's leadership qualities played a big hand in India's unbeaten run in the ongoing T20 World Cup, and urged the team to play with freedom in the final against South Africa to end a 11-year wait for an ICC trophy.

India will face the Proteas in the title clash at Bridgetown, Barbados, and will be eyeing their first global trophy since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013.

"I'm very happy for Rohit Sharma. Life comes full circle. Six months ago he was not even the captain of Mumbai Indians and the same man is now leading India to a World Cup final, unbeaten," he said.

Sports world reacts to Alex Morgan being left off 2024 USWNT Olympic roster

a world without social media essay

For the first time since 2008, the Olympics will be without Alex Morgan .

On June 26, the United States Women's National Team revealed that Morgan will not be a member of the 2024 Paris Olympics roster, a surprising move that leaves the veteran home come July.

Morgan is a two-time Olympic medalist, helping the USWNT secure a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic games and a Bronze medal in 2021 . Morgan, a staple of the international team, has also helped guide the USWNT to FIFA Women's World Cup victories in 2015 and 2019.

Still, Morgan's omission left quite a mark on the sports world which was hoping to see No. 13 on the world's biggest stage.

Wowee. No Alex Morgan. End of an era. https://t.co/uVZ7TmJbeC — Sarah Spain (@SarahSpain) June 26, 2024

Morgan has struggled to score goals during the 2024 NWSL slate. In eight matches with the San Diego Wave this season, Morgan has yet to find the net. That's a troubling trend for Morgan, who also failed to score a goal in pool play in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

What is Alex Morgan's age?

Alex Morgan is 34 years old and will turn 35 on July 2.

Biden and Trump go head to head: How to watch the first general election presidential debate

A new AP-NORC poll finds that most U.S. adults plan to watch or listen to some element of Thursday’s presidential debate. And many think the stakes are high for both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

ATLANTA (AP) — The first general election debate of the 2024 election season is here, and it’s a historic moment no matter what happens on stage.

Follow AP’s live coverage of the debate.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are taking part in Thursday night’s debate in Atlanta. Not only is it the first-ever matchup between a sitting president and a former one, but it’s also the first debate for either candidate in this year’s election. And it’s happening so early in the general election campaign cycle that neither man will have accepted their party’s formal nomination yet.

Here’s how to watch the debate:

What time is the debate?

The debate will start at 9 p.m. ET Thursday. It’s being moderated by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.

What channel is the debate on?

CNN is carrying the debate live on its broadcast network, as well as on CNN International, CNN en Español and CNN Max. Viewers can also stream it without a log in on CNN’s website. Several networks have also agreed to carry the event live.

Where is the debate?

The setting for the first general election debate is CNN’s studios in Atlanta. Unlike the Republican primary debates, no audience will be present.

Once a Republican stronghold, Georgia was a pivotal battleground in 2020. Both parties are preparing for another closely contested race in the state this year. Trump also faces an indictment in Georgia for his push to “find 11,780 votes” and overturn Biden’s victory based on false or unproven theories of voter fraud.

Which candidates will be on stage?

Two candidates — Biden and Trump — will be on stage. For a time, it seemed like they wouldn’t be meeting up at all.

Biden’s campaign had proposed excluding third-party candidates, such as Robert F. Kennedy Jr. , from the debates outright. Under the debate commission’s rules, Kennedy or other third-party candidates could qualify if they secured ballot access sufficient to claim 270 Electoral Votes and polled at 15% or higher in a selection of national surveys.

Both CNN and ABC announced the same qualification threshold, saying candidates will need to reach at least 15% in four separate national polls of registered or likely voters that meet their standards, between March 13 and a week ahead of Thursday’s match up. Last week, CNN announced that Kennedy hadn’t met those markers .

Presidential debate prep: How Biden and Trump are approaching their first face-off in four years

Trump didn’t take part in any of the GOP primary debates, so this is his first time on stage this cycle. Biden didn’t debate any of the Democrats challenging him, either.

Last month, Biden announced that he would not participate in fall presidential debates sponsored by the nonpartisan commission that has organized them for more than three decades. Instead, his campaign proposed that media outlets directly organize the debates between the presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees .

Hours later, Biden said he had accepted an invitation from CNN, adding, “Over to you, Donald.” Trump, who had insisted he would debate Biden anytime and anyplace, said on Truth Social he’d be there, too, adding, “Let’s get ready to Rumble!!!” Soon after that, they agreed to a second debate.

Image

What’s up next?

ABC will host the second debate on Sept. 10. The network has not offered details on where its event would be held, only that it would be moderated by anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis.

And don’t forget about the running mates. Trump hasn’t named his yet, but Vice President Kamala Harris has accepted an invitation from CBS News to debate her eventual rival in studio on either July 23 or Aug. 13.

The Supreme Court rules for Biden administration in a social media dispute with conservative states

A couple dozen people on foot and on bikes stand outside the Supreme Court building, some taking photographs with their phones.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday sided with the Biden administration in a dispute with Republican-led states over how far the federal government can go to combat controversial social media posts on topics including COVID-19 and election security.

By a 6-3 vote, the justices threw out lower-court rulings that favored Louisiana, Missouri and other parties in their claims that officials in the Democratic administration leaned on the social media platforms to unconstitutionally squelch conservative points of view.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett wrote for the court that the states and other parties did not have the legal right, or standing, to sue. Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas dissented.

The decision should not affect typical social media users or their posts.

The case is among several before the court this term that affect social media companies in the context of free speech. In February, the court heard arguments over Republican-passed laws in Florida and Texas that prohibit large social media companies from taking down posts because of the views they express. In March, the court laid out standards for when public officials can block their social media followers .

The cases over state laws and the one that was decided Wednesday are variations on the same theme, complaints that the platforms are censoring conservative viewpoints.

The states had argued that White House communications staffers, the surgeon general, the FBI and the U.S. cybersecurity agency are among those who applied “unrelenting pressure” to coerce changes in online content on social media platforms.

The justices appeared broadly skeptical of those claims during arguments in March and several worried that common interactions between government officials and the platforms could be affected by a ruling for the states.

The Biden administration underscored those concerns when it noted that the government would lose its ability to communicate with the social media companies about antisemitic and anti-Muslim posts, as well as on issues of national security, public health and election integrity.

But the justices did not weigh in on the substance of the states’ claims or the administration’s response in their decision Wednesday.

“We begin — and end — with standing,” Barrett wrote. “At this stage, neither the individual nor the state plaintiffs have established standing to seek an injunction against any defendant. We therefore lack jurisdiction to reach the merits of the dispute.”

In dissent, Alito wrote that the states amply demonstrated their right to sue. “For months, high-ranking government officials placed unrelenting pressure on Facebook to suppress Americans’ free speech. Because the court unjustifiably refuses to address this serious threat to the First Amendment, I respectfully dissent,” he wrote for the three justices in the minority.

The Supreme Court had earlier acted to keep the lower-court rulings on hold. Alito, Gorsuch and Thomas would have allowed the restrictions on government contacts with the platforms to go into effect.

Free speech advocates had urged the court to use the case to draw an appropriate line between the government’s acceptable use of the bully pulpit and coercive threats to free speech.

A panel of three judges on the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had ruled earlier that the Biden administration had probably brought unconstitutional pressure on the media platforms. The appellate panel said officials cannot attempt to “coerce or significantly encourage” changes in online content. The panel had previously narrowed a more sweeping order from a federal judge, who wanted to include even more government officials and prohibit mere encouragement of content changes.

The decision was the sixth this term in which the court threw out rulings by the 5th Circuit, one of the nation’s most conservative appeals courts. Last week, the court upheld a gun restriction aimed at protecting domestic violence victims, overturning a 5th Circuit panel.

Earlier in June, the court unanimously ruled that anti-abortion doctors lacked standing to challenge Food and Drug Administration decisions to ease access to the abortion drug mifepristone.

The case is Murthy v. Missouri, 23-411.

In a world without social media..., can you imagine.

In A World Without Social Media...

Take a moment and imagine your life without social media.

(While you delve into this thought, feel free to continue reading this article even though it was likely shared to you on some sort of social media platform...)

Here's the image that should be appearing in your head right about now:

Board games. Lots and lots of board games. From Monopoly to Candy Land, life would be filled with endless 20 x 20 in . adventures.

I'm kidding...

Without social media, life would inevitably be different. Human interaction would be more direct and homework would be completed in a timely manner. While these realities may seem positive and beneficial, there are certainly other sides of the equation that should be considered.

T he following is my take on the harsh reality of human life without social media:

1. Forget Online Dating Apps, forget Tinder; you have to talk to people.

Unbelievable, right? You no longer have 10 minutes to brainstorm witty, flirtatious responses to a potential significant other. You no longer have time to think of subpar pick-up lines to attract the person you are interested in. In real life, things get awkward if you fail to compose a response within 10 seconds. In real life, pick-up lines are weird.

2. Forget Twitter, forget Snapchat, you have to be funny in real life.

No longer can you retweet something hilarious that someone says, or filter your face with a rainbow escaping your mouth. No longer can you subtweet someone you’re mad at or post pictures on your Snapchat story to make your life seem cooler than it actually is. In real life, if you verbally say the word “retweet” to something you find funny or relatable, people will look at you strangely. In real life, if you find that rainbows appear when you open your mouth, I would advise seeing your doctor.

3. Forget Instagram, forget Tumblr, your life can no longer be displayed through photos.

No longer will you be able to “like” someone’s photo or strive to attain 11 likes on your own picture. No longer will you have the ability to make your “feed” look artsy and visually appealing. In real life, you are that pale. In real life, the best picture of last Sunday’s Supermoon was seen and taken with these innovative and all-natural devices called the (dare I say it) human eyes.

4. Forget Facebook, forget Yik Yak, the best way to speak your mind is through speech itself.

No longer can you post a Facebook rant about how ignorant and inconsiderate your parents are. No longer can you send out anonymous Yaks about how lonely you are or how horribly you performed on an exam. In real life, your parents would rather you approach them and address an issue you have with them. In real life, most anonymous gestures are considered creepy.

Here's the good news...

Until the day social media vanishes entirely from the hands of human society, we can continue being weird and creepy. We can continue retweeting pictures of puppies, snapchatting shameless pictures of ourselves to our friends, and swiping right on people we don't know.

However, I think it's safe to say that there's more to reality than this. Everyday we go through the daily motions of life, we see incredible things and meet incredible people. I think something's missing. I think we've missed out on countless opportunities. I think we've ignored and pushed aside what really matters.

I think the real world awaits us.

25 beatles lyrics: your go-to guide for every situation, the best lines from the fab four.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make

The End- Abbey Road, 1969

The sun is up, the sky is blue, it's beautiful and so are you

Dear Prudence- The White Album, 1968

Love is old, love is new, love is all, love is you

Because- Abbey Road, 1969

There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be

All You Need Is Love, 1967

Life is very short, and there's no time for fussing and fighting, my friend

We Can Work It Out- Rubber Soul, 1965

He say, "I know you, you know me", One thing I can tell you is you got to be free

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see

Strawberry Fields Forever- Magical Mystery Tour, 1967

Can you hear me? When it rains and shine, it's just a state of mind

Rain- Paperback Writer "B" side, 1966

Little darling, it's been long cold lonely winter. Little darling, it feels like years since it' s been here. Here comes the sun, Here comes the sun, and I say it's alright

Here Comes The Sun- Abbey Road, 1969

We danced through the night and we held each other tight, and before too long I fell in love with her. Now, I'll never dance with another when I saw her standing there

Saw Her Standing There- Please Please Me, 1963

I love you, I love you, I love you, that's all I want to say

Michelle- Rubber Soul, 1965

You say you want a revolution. Well you know, we all want to change the world

Revolution- The Beatles, 1968

All the lonely people, where do they all come from. All the lonely people, where do they all belong

Eleanor Rigby- Revolver, 1966

Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends

With A Little Help From My Friends- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967

Hey Jude, don't make it bad. Take a sad song and make it better

Hey Jude, 1968

Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far away. Now it looks as though they're here to stay. Oh, I believe in yesterday

Yesterday- Help!, 1965

And when the brokenhearted people, living in the world agree, there will be an answer, let it be.

Let It Be- Let It Be, 1970

And anytime you feel the pain, Hey Jude, refrain. Don't carry the world upon your shoulders

I'll give you all i got to give if you say you'll love me too. i may not have a lot to give but what i got i'll give to you. i don't care too much for money. money can't buy me love.

Can't Buy Me Love- A Hard Day's Night, 1964

All you need is love, love is all you need

All You Need Is Love- Magical Mystery Tour, 1967

Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly. all your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird- The White Album, 1968

Though I know I'll never lose affection, for people and things that went before. I know I'll often stop and think about them. In my life, I love you more

In My Life- Rubber Soul, 1965

While these are my 25 favorites, there are quite literally 1000s that could have been included. The Beatles' body of work is massive and there is something for everyone. If you have been living under a rock and haven't discovered the Fab Four, you have to get musically educated. Stream them on Spotify, find them on iTunes or even buy a CD or record (Yes, those still exist!). I would suggest starting with 1, which is a collection of most of their #1 songs, or the 1968 White Album. Give them chance and you'll never look back.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

SEE MORE: A Letter To My Best Friend On Her Birthday

The love you have for your family is outstanding. Watching you interact with loved ones just makes me smile . You are so comfortable and you are yourself. I see the way you smile when you are around family and I wish I could see you smile like this everyday. You love with all your heart and this quality is something I wished I possessed.

You inspire me to be the best version of myself. I look up to you. I feel that more people should strive to have the strength and passion that you exemplify in everyday life. You may be stubborn at points but when you really need help you let others in, which shows strength in itself. I have never been more proud to know someone and to call someone my role model. You have taught me so many things and I want to thank you. Thank you for inspiring me in life. Thank you for making me want to be a better person.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

How to Watch the Biden-Trump Presidential Debate

The debate will be hosted by CNN from its Atlanta studios starting at 9 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday.

  • Published June 25, 2024 Updated June 27, 2024

The moment has been four years in the making: President Biden and former President Donald J. Trump on a debate stage, another flashpoint in their long-running hostilities.

The debate, hosted by CNN at its Atlanta studios starting at 9 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, will occur without an in-person audience and before Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden formally accept their parties’ nominations this summer, in a dramatic departure from the past.

Where can I watch it?

The New York Times will stream the debate alongside real-time commentary and analysis from reporters.

CNN will broadcast or stream the debate on all its platforms, including its flagship cable channel, as well as CNN International, CNN en Español and CNN Max. The network also plans to stream the debate on CNN.com.

CNN is also sharing its feed with other broadcast and cable news networks so that they could simulcast the debate. That means you can also watch it on Fox News, ABC News, NBC News and probably elsewhere.

Will Robert F. Kennedy Jr. be onstage?

No. He failed to meet CNN’s requirements, which means Ross Perot remains the last independent candidate to have qualified for a general election presidential debate — and that was in 1992. For this debate, participants had to receive at least 15 percent support in four approved national polls and qualify for the ballot in enough states to have the chance to earn the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

Who is moderating the debate?

The moderators will be Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, who are fixtures on the anchor desk at CNN and the hosts of the network’s Sunday political talk show, “ State of the Union .” Mr. Tapper is CNN’s chief Washington correspondent, and Ms. Bash is the network’s chief political correspondent.

Neil Vigdor covers politics for The Times, focusing on voting rights issues and election disinformation. More about Neil Vigdor
