Rational Numbers Important Questions For Class 8

The questions from rational numbers are segregated into short and long answer type questions.

Short Answer Type Questions:

1. What are the multiplicative and additive identities of rational numbers?

Solution:  0 and 1 are the additive and multiplicative identity of rational numbers respectively.

2. Write the additive inverse of 19/-6 and -⅔

Solution:  19/-6 = 19/6 and -⅔ = 2/3

3. Write the multiplicative inverse of -13/19 and -7

Solution:  -13/19 = -19/13 and -7 = -1/7

4. Mention a rational number which has no reciprocal.

Solution:  A rational number “0” has no reciprocal or multiplicative inverse.

5. Mention any 4 rational numbers which are less than 5.

Solution: -1, 1, 2 and 3.

Long Answer Type Questions:

6. Mention the commutativity, associative and distributive properties of rational numbers. Also, check a × b = b × a and a + b = b + a for a = ½ and b = ¾

Commutative property: For any two rational numbers a and b, a + b = b + a. For any two rational numbers a and b, a × b = b × a. Associative Property: For any three rational numbers a, b and c, (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) Distributive property states that for any three numbers x, y and z, x × ( y + z ) = (x × y) + ( x × z)

a*b = b*a a*b = ½ * ¾ = 3/8 b*a = ¾ * ½ = 3/8 a + b = ¾ + ½ = 5/4 b + a = ½ + ¾ = 5/4

7. Write any 5 rational numbers between −2/5 and ½.

Solution:  −2/5 can be written as −8/20. 1/2 can be written as 10/20. So, rational numbers between these two numbers can be, −7/20,−6/20,−5/20,−4/20,−3/20,−2/20,−1/20,0,1/20,2/20,3/20,4/20.

8. If the product of any two rational numbers is 2 and one of them is 1/7, find the other?

Solution:  Consider 2 rational numbers as “a” and “b”.

Given, a = 1/7 and a × b = 2

Now, 1/7 × b = 2

⇒ b = 7 × 2 = 14

So, the other rational number will be 14.

9. Mr X went shopping with a certain amount of money. He spent Rs. 10(¼) on buying a pen and Rs. 25(¾) in food. He then gave the remaining Rs. 16(½) to his friend. Calculate how much money he initially had.

Solution:  To get the amount of money Mr X had initially, his purchases have to be added.

= Rs. (41/4 + 103/4 + 33/2)

By taking LCM, we get;

=Rs. (41  + 103 + 66)/4

= Rs. 210/4

Initial Money = Rs. 105/2 (or) Rs. 52(½)

10. Represent −𝟐/𝟏𝟏, −𝟓/𝟏𝟏, and −𝟗/ 𝟏𝟏 on the number line.

Solution:  To represent these numbers, divide the number line into 11 parts. Now, the given rational numbers will be 2, 5 and 9 points away from 0.

Chapter 1 of Class 8 Maths is about ‘Rational Numbers’.  We are already familiar with some types of numbers. We have studied natural numbers, whole numbers as well as integers. Natural numbers are those numbers that begin with 1 and go on endlessly up to infinity. Whole numbers are those that start from 0 to infinity. And an integer is a whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero. A rational number is a kind of number that is represented as the ratio of any two integers, in which the denominator cannot be equal to zero. In contrast, an irrational number cannot be expressed in the form of fractions.

Rational Numbers Class 8 Test Paper with Answers

Our in-house Maths faculty experts have collated an entire list of Important Questions Class 8 Maths Chapter 1 by referring to various sources. For each question, the team has prepared a step-by-step explanation that will help students understand the concepts used in each question. Also, the questions are chosen in a way that would cover full chapter topics. So by practicing from our question bank, students will be able to revise the chapter and understand their strong and weak points. And improve their preparation by further focusing on weaker sections of the chapter.

Given below are a few of the questions and answers from our question bank of Important Questions Class 8 Maths Chapter 1:

Question 1: Mention the commutativity, associative and distributive properties of rational numbers. Also, check a × b = b × a and a + b = b + a for a = ½ and b = ¾

Answer 1: Commutative property:

Let a and b be the two rational numbers,

a + b = b + a.

a × b = b × a.

Associative Property:

For any three rational numbers a, b and c,

(a + b) + c = a + (b + c)

Distributive property states that for any three numbers x, y and z,

x × ( y + z ) = (x × y) + ( x × z)

a*b = ½ * ¾ = 3/8

b*a = ¾ * ½ = 3/8

a + b = ¾ + ½ = 5/4

b + a = ½ + ¾ = 5/4

Question 2: Write the additive inverse of the following-

        a)-27 b) -58 c)9-4

Answer 2: a) The additive inverse of 27 is -27.

  • b) The additive inverse of -58 is 58.
  • c) The additive inverse of 9-4 is -94.

Question 3: Mention a rational number that has no reciprocal.

Answer 3: The rational number “0” has no reciprocal or multiplicative inverse.

Question 4: Verify commutativity of addition of rational numbers 4 9 and -7 12 .

Answer 4: We need to show that a b + c d = c d + a b

In the question a=4, b=9, c=-7 and d=12

4 9 +( -7 12 )= 4 4 9 4 + (-7 3) 12 3 = 16 36 + (-21) 36 = 16-21 36 =( -5 36 )

-7 12 + 4 9 = (-7 3) 12 3 + 4 4 9 4 = -21 36 + 16 36 = -21+16 36 =( -5 36 )

4 9 +( -7 12 ) = -7 12 + 4 9

Hence verified.

Question 5 : Find a rational number between 3 and 4.

Answer 5 : The rational number between any two numbers can be calculated as (p+q)2.

Let’s assume p=3 and q=4.

So, the required rational number is (3+4)2 = 72;

Therefore, 72 is the required answer.

Question 6: The equivalent rational number of 7/9, whose denominator is 45, is.

Answer 6: From the given question,

 The equivalent rational number of 7/9 = Numerator/45

To get 45 in the denominator,

It is essential to multiply both the numerator and denominator by 5,

= (7 × 5)/ (9 × 5)

So, the equivalent rational number of 7/9, whose denominator is 45, is (35/45)

Question 7: What are the multiplicative and additive identities of rational numbers?

Answer 7: 0 and 1 are the additive and multiplicative identities of rational numbers, respectively.

Question 8.   If the product of any rational numbers is 2 and one of them is  1 5 , find the other.

Answer 8: Consider the two rational numbers as “a” and “b”.

Given, a= 15 and  a × b = 2

So, 15 × b = 2

⇒ b = 5 × 2 = 10

Therefore, the other rational number is 10.

Question 9: Write five rational numbers smaller than 2.

Answer 9: Five rational numbers smaller than 2 are 1, 1 2 , 0, -1, – 1 2 .

Question 10: The reciprocal of any rational number p q , where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0, is

(a) p q (b) 1  (c) 0  (d) q p

Answer 10 : (d) q p

The reciprocal of p q = q p

Question 11: Multiply 6 13 by the reciprocal of -7 10 .

Question 11: Reciprocal of -7 10 is -10 7

6 13 -10 7 = -60 91

Therefore, the required answer is -60 91 .

Question 12:  2/5 × (- 3 / 7 ) – 1 / 6 × 3 / 2 + 1 / 14 × 2 / 5

Answer 12: 2 / 5 × ( – 3/ 7) – 1/6 × 3/ 2 + 1 / 14 × 2 / 5

                 = 2/5 × (- 3/7) + 1/14 × 2/5 – (1/6 × 3/2) (by commutativity)

                 = 2/5 × (- 3 / 7 + 1 / 14) – 3/12

                 = 2/5 × {(- 6 + 1)/14} – 3/12

                 = 2 / 5 × ((- 5)/14)) – 1/4

                 = (-10/70) – 1/4

                 = – 1/7 – 1/4

                 = (– 4– 7)/28

                 = – 11/28

Question 13: Find the rational numbers between -2/5 and 1/2.

Answer 13: Let us make the denominators the same, say 50.

                      -2/5 = (-2 × 10)/(5 × 10) = -20/50

                       1/2 = (1 × 25)/(2 × 25) = 25/50

                      Ten rational numbers between -2/5 and ½ = ten rational numbers between -20/50 and 25/50

  Therefore, ten rational numbers between -20/50 and 25/50 = -18/50, -15/50, -5/50, -2/50, 4/50, 5/50, 8/50, 12/50, 15/50, 20/50

Question 14: Verify associativity of addition of rational numbers when, x= 1 2 , y= 1 3 , z= -1 5

Answer 14: We need to show that, (x + y) + z = x + (y + z).

                       x= 1 2 , y= 1 3 , z= -1 5

                       (x + y) + z = ( 1 2 + 1 3 ) + -1 5

                    = ( 3 6 + 2 6 ) + -1 5     (taking LCM)

                    = 5 6 + ( -1 5 )

                    = 25 30 + ( -6 30 )     (taking LCM)

                    = 25-6 30

                    = 19 30

 x + (y + z) = 1 2 + ( 1 3 + -1 5 )

                   = 1 2 + ( 5 15 + -3 15 )     (taking LCM)

                   = 1 2 + 2 15

                   = 15 30 + 4 30                 (taking LCM)

                    = 15+4 30

                     = 19 30

Therefore, ( 1 2 + 1 3 ) + -1 5 = 1 2 + ( 1 3 + -1 5 )

Question 15:  Find: ( -14 9 ) 3 5 ( -4 7 ) 15 16

Answer 15: ( -14 9 3 5 ) ( -4 7 15 16 )

                     = ( -14 3 1 5 ) ( -1 7 15 4 )

                     = -14 15 ( -15 28 )

                     = 14 28

                    = 1 2

Question 16: Three numbers are in the ratio 2 : 3: 4. The sum of their cubes is 0.334125. Find the numbers.

Answer 16: Given, the ratio of the three numbers is 2 : 3: 4.

Let 2x, 3x and 4x be the three numbers.

According to the given details,

( 2x )³ + ( 3x)³  + ( 4x )³ =  0.334125

8x³  +   27x³   + 64x³ = 0.334125

99x³  = 0.334125

x³ = 334125/(1000000 × 99)

= 3375/1000000

x = ∛(3375/1000000)

= ∛[(15 × 15 × 15)/(100 × 100 × 100)]

2x = 2(0.15) = 0.3

3x = 3(0.15) = 0.45

4x = 4(0.15) = 0.6

Therefore, the three numbers are 0.3, 0.45 and 0.6.

Question 17: Subtract the sum of 3a + 2b – c and 5b – 6a + 2ab from the sum of 9b – 11ab and -4a + 21ab.

Answer 17: 3a + 2b – c + 5b – 6a + 2ab

                     = (3a – 6a) + (2b + 5b) + 2ab

                     = -3a + 7b + 2ab….(i)

                      9b -11ab + (-4a + 21ab)

                     = 9b + (-11ab + 21ab) – 4a

                     = 9b + 10ab – 4a….(ii)

                     Subtracting (i) from (ii),

                     9b + 10ab – 4a – (-3a + 7b + 2ab)

                     = 9b + 10ab – 4a + 3a – 7b – 2ab

                     = 8ab – a + 2b

Question 18: Verify – (-x) = x for  x = 3 5

Answer 18:  – x = -3 5

                       – (-x) = – ( -3 5 )

                             x = 3 5

                        Hence verified

Question 19: Tell what property allows you to compute 1 3 (6 4 3 ) as ( 1 3 6) 4 3 ?

Answer 19: 1 3 (6 4 3 ) = 8 3

( 1 3 6) 4 3 = 8 3

We can see that the product is unaffected by the arrangement of the factors in the multiplication problem. Thus, the associativity property is applied in this case.

Question 20:  Simplify each of the following by using suitable properties. Also, name the property.

  • a) ( 1 2 1 4 ) + ( 1 2 6)

Answer 20 : 1 2 ( 1 4 +6)           (taking out 1 2 as common

                       = 1 2 ( 1+24 4 )

                       = 1 2 ( 25 4 )

                       = 1 2 25 4

                        = 25 8

                       The distributive property of multiplication over the distributive property of addition is used in this part.

Question 21:  Simplify each of the following by using suitable properties. Also, name the property.

( 1 5 2 15 )-( 1 5 2 5 )

Answer 21: 1 5 ( 2 15 – 2 5 )               (taking out 1 5 common)

                        2 15 = 2 1 15 1 = 2 15                       (LCM of the denominators 15 and 5 is 15)

                    and 2 5 = 2 3 5 3 = 6 15

                     = 1 5 ( 2 15 – 6 15 )

                       = 1 5 ( 2-6 15 )

                     = 1 5 ( -4 15 )

                     = 1 5 -4 15

                      = -4 75

The distributive property of multiplication over the distributive property of subtraction is used in this part.

Question 22: Find ten rational numbers between -1 3 and 1 3 .

Answer 22: Multiply the numerator and denominator of both the fractions by any whole number, say 10.

                      We get, -1 3 10 10 = -10 30

                        1 3 10 10 = 10 30

    Therefore, the equivalent fractions are -10 30 and 10 30 .

Ten rational numbers between them are -9 30 , -8 30 , -7 30 , -6 30 , -5 30 , 5 30 , 6 30 , 7 30 , 8 30 and 9 30 .

Question 23: Divide the sum of 7/8 and 15/24 by their difference. Express your answer in standard form.

Answer 23: Sum of 7/8 and 15/24: (7/8) + (15/24)

                                                              = (21 + 15)/24

                                                              = 36/24

                                                              = 3/2

                    Difference between 7/8 and 15/24: (7/8) – (15/24)

                                                                               = (21 – 15)/24

                                                                                = 6/24

                                                                                = 1/4

                     Now, dividing the sum by the difference,

                      (3/2) / (1/4)

                    = (3/2) × 4

                     = 6

Question 24: Find ten rational numbers between 3/5 and ¾.

Answer 24: Let us make the denominators the same, say 80.

3/5 = (3 × 16)/(5× 16) = 48/80

3/4 = (3 × 20)/(4 × 20) = 60/80

Ten rational numbers between 3/5 and ¾ = ten rational numbers between 48/80 and 60/80

Therefore, ten rational numbers between 48/80 and 60/80 = 49/80, 50/80, 51/80, 52/80, 54/80, 55/80, 56/80, 57/80, 58/80, 59/80

Question 25: 7/11 of the money in Hamid’s bank account altogether is ₹ 77,000. How much money does Hamid have in his bank account?

Answer 25: In the question,

               it is given that

               7/11 part of all the money in the bank account of Hami = ₹ 77,000.

               Let the money in the bank account of Hamid be ₹ x.

               so,

               ( 7 / 11 ) × ( x ) = ₹ 77,000

               x = 77,000 / (7/11)

               x = 77000 × (11/7)

               x = 11000 × 11

               x = ₹ 1,21,000

∴The total money in the bank account of Hamid is ₹ 121000.

Question 26: 2/5 of the number of students of a school come by car, while 1/4 of students travel by bus to school. The remaining students walk to school, out of which 1/3 walk on their own accord and the rest are escorted by their own parents. If 224 out of all students come to school walking on their own accord, how many students study in that school?

Answer 26: Let the total number of students in school be x.

                      From the question, it is given that,

                      The number of students coming by car = (2/5) × x

                      The number of students coming by bus = (1/4) × x

                      The remaining students walk to school = x – ((2x/5) + (1x/4))

                                                                                            = x – ((8x – 5x)/20)

                                                                                            = x – (13x/20)

                                                                                            = (20x – 13x)/20

                                                                                            = 7x/20

Then, the number of students who come to school walking on their own= (1/3) of (7x/20)

                                                                                                                                  = 7x/60

Since 224 students come to school walking on their own.

As per the given conditions,

= (7x/60) = 224

x = (224 × 60)/7

x = 32 × 60

∴ The total number of students in that particular school is 1920.

Question 27: Find the product of the additive and multiplicative inverse of 1/3.

Answer 27: Additive inverse of -1/3 = 1/3

                      Multiplicative inverse of -1/3 = -3/1

                      Then,

                       The product of additive and multiplicative inverse of 1/3 = 1/3 × (-3)

                                                                                                                            = -1

Question 28: How much longer is the wingspan of a golden eagle than the wingspan of a blue jay?

Answer 28: We have to find out the difference between the wingspan of a golden eagle and the wingspan of a blue jay.

Length of the wingspan of a golden eagle = 2½ = 5/2 m

Length of the wingspan of a blue jay = 41/100 m

Difference of both = (5/2) – (41/100)

= (250 – 41)/ 100

= 209/100 m

∴The wingspan of a golden eagle is 209/100 m longer than the wingspan of a blue jay.

Question 29: Select the correct answer based on the following:

What should be subtracted from -5/3 to obtain  5/6?

Answer 29: A number is represented in the form of p/q, where q≠0 is referred to as a rational number in maths. Subtracting rational numbers works in the same way that adding them does.

Let us consider one of the numbers as x

-5/3 –x = 5/6

-5/3 – 5/6 = x

x = (-5/3 ) – 5/6

By taking the least common multiple  for 3 and 6 as 6, we get

x = (-5×2 – 5×1)/6

= (-10-5)/6

By further dividing by 3, we get

-15/6 = -5/2

Question 30: Find the rational number between 2 and 3

Answer 30: Let us consider the rational number as x

                    So to find the rational number between 2 and 3

                    By using the formula x= ½ (a/b + c/d)

                    x = ½(2 + 3)

                    x = ½(5)

                        = 5/2

∴ The rational number between 2 and 3 is 5/2.

Question 31 : Praful reads 15 pages of a storybook in a day. Raju reads 10 pages of the same given book in a day. How many days are required for Raju to finish the given book if Praful finishes in 13 days?

Answer 31: The number of pages read by Praful in a day = 15

               The number of pages read by Raju in a day = 10

               The number of days required for Praful to finish the book = 13

               That means the total number of pages = 15 × 13

                                                                                  = 195

              Hence, the number of days Raju will take to finish the book

                                                                                                   = 195/10

                                                                                                    = 19.5 days

Question 32: A rectangular piece of paper 12 cm x 5 cm is folded without overlapping to make a cylinder of height 4 cm. Find the volume of the cylinder.

Answer 32: The length of the rectangular paper = 12 cm

                      The breadth of the rectangular paper = 5 cm

                      The circumference of the circular part of the given cylinder = 2πr

                      Also, given that the paper is rolled along its length.

                     The circumference of the circular part of the given cylinder = Length of the rectangular

                      paper

                      2πr = 12 cm

                      2 × (22/7) × r = 12

                      r = (12 × 7)/44

                      r = 84/44

                      r = 21/11 cm

                      Height of cylinder = Breadth of the rectangular paper = h = 4 cm

                      Volume of cylinder = πr2h

                                                         =  (22/7) × (21/11) × (21/11) × 4

                                                         = 45.82 cm³

What’s Next? Analysis of GCSE Maths Paper 1 Topics With Recommended Revision List For GCSE Maths Paper 2 and Paper 3 (2024)

Christine Norledge

Back for 2024, expert consultant and contributor Christine Norledge provides a detailed analysis of the GCSE maths exam Paper 1 topics from both the Foundation and Higher papers . Christine offers key recommendations on what’s likely to come up in Papers 2 and 3 and includes a hit list of recommended topics to revise next.

Last Thursday this year’s cohort of GCSE students sat their first GCSE Maths paper, which means we’re kicking off another round of live analysis blogs for the Edexcel Foundation and Higher papers. Following Paper 1 non-Calulator and Paper 2 Calculator, we look at content gaps to provide students with target areas to focus their revision for the next paper.

We’ll be here shortly after each paper with:

  • A brief topic analysis
  • Any unusual quirks
  • Interesting questions or surprises
  • Suggestions to support your students in preparing for Paper 2 and Paper 3

This article focuses on the 2024 Edexcel Foundation and Higher Paper 1, rather than AQA, OCR or IGCSE exam board. It’s also about GCSE mathematics, rather than any A Level maths.

Any recommendations in this analysis are an interpretation of GCSE Maths Paper 1. Edexcel does not endorse the analysis or recommendations. The question papers and mark schemes have not yet been formally released.

Revision focus lists for Foundation and Higher Papers 2 and 3

If you’re in a hurry, here are the revision focus lists for GCSE Maths Papers 2 and 3. These are the topics I’d direct students towards to ensure that they could do, and do well.

While we would all like to know exactly which topics will appear on Paper 2 and Paper 3, no one can make an exact prediction. The lists below are only suggestions, not exhaustive predictions of the next two papers.

How best to share revision recommendations

If you are concerned about students over-interpreting revision focus lists, share these topics in a different format. You could use the Third Space Learning secondary maths resources to create a collection of practice exam questions targeting these top topics.

Free GCSE Maths Paper 2 and Paper 3 revision bundle

To make it easier, we’ve already created a free Paper 2 and Paper 3 revision bundle that includes worksheets on the hit list topics. Each worksheet includes functional and applied reasoning questions, practice questions and exam-style questions

You’ll find links to specific GCSE maths revision resources for everything you need for each of the hit list revision topics, including:

  • Revision Guides
  • Exam Questions
  • GCSE Worksheets
  • GCSE Maths Past Papers

Data behind the Paper 2 and Paper 3 revision list

These revision lists are created using a combination of:

  • Data analyses of all previous (June and November) series of GCSE Foundation and GCSE Higher papers
  • Lists of topics that have appeared more frequently on Calculator papers
  • Topics only assessed on the Calculator papers
  • Topic lists from Paper 1 Foundation and Higher, sat by students on 16th May

In each series, some topics tend to appear only on one paper – it is less likely, although not impossible, that they will appear in subsequent papers.

For this series, that includes topics such as:

  • Stem and leaf diagrams (Foundation)
  • Finding the equation of a line from a graph (Common)
  • Recurring decimals to fractions (Higher)

Some broader topics appear on two or more papers but tend to be different question types. They may change in difficulty, context or assessment objective addressed.

For example, it’s almost guaranteed that more ratio questions appear on one of the Foundation Calculator papers. However, these are unlikely to be as straightforward as writing as a ratio or simplifying a ratio.

For further details and other suggested topics, see the more detailed tables and analysis that follow.

Student reactions to Maths Paper 1

Before analysing Paper 1 in more detail, let’s quickly see what this year’s cohort made of their Paper 1 experience.  True to style, students have driven to social media to share their humour and opinions about Edexcel Paper 1

Student reaction to maths paper 1

It’s safe to say that this year’s cohort, both Foundation and Higher, have found their first paper fairly challenging.

Analysis process and terminology for Maths Paper 1

This blog uses the same processes and classifications as previous exam analysis blog posts:

  • Question Level Analysis Of Edexcel Maths Past Papers (Foundation) (2017-2023)
  • Question Level Analysis Of Edexcel GCSE Maths Higher Past Papers (2017-2023)

This year, there are some changes to names and categories. Ratio and proportion is now its own strand as this closely aligns our analysis blog series with the GCSE Resource Library and the one-to-one GCSE Maths Revision Programme .

To summarise, I’ve analysed the Foundation and Higher paper, assigned each question a topic and strand, noted the number of marks available and given a ‘complexity’ score, which broadly aligns with the GCSE assessment objectives (see more below).

Topic classification used across all GCSE maths papers

Strand abbreviations used are as follows:

Maths paper 1 strand abbreviations

To help simplify the analysis process, high-mark problem-solving questions are classified only by their main topic .

For multi-topic questions, I’ve selected the topic required to access the majority of the marks on the question. While this omits a little detail, it makes it easier to identify trends across a larger data set.

Complexity classification used across all GCSE maths papers

The following categories help to give an idea of the complexity of each question:

Maths paper 1 complexity analysis

This is not a ‘difficulty’ measure. For example, ‘higher grade’ topics on each tier, such as simultaneous equations on Foundation tier or trigonometric graphs on Higher tier are often examined as standard procedural.

We can see examples from this year’s Paper 1 with arithmetic sequences and fraction calculations in the crossover content (i.e. top end of Foundation), and the surds questions towards the end of the Higher paper.

The following suggestions are based on data analysis of all previous June paper series sat by students (2017-2019 and 2022-2023) – this is five series of papers.

While we now work with a fairly large data set, these are only informed recommendations . Professional judgment should guide and decide on what to do with the information.

Detailed analysis of Maths Paper 1 Foundation 2024

Unlike last year, this year’s Foundation Paper 1 felt rather mixed.

As usual, the paper started with accessible one-markers followed by a simple money problem. Additional straightforward marks were available later in the paper, such as the procedural 3-by-2-digit multiplication in Q14.

But compared to last year’s summer paper, there were some more challenging questions early on. In particular, the open-ended Q7 which invited students to draw “a suitable diagram or chart” rather than telling them which chart to draw. This feels off-trend at such an early stage in the paper.

Algebra made very little appearance in the first half of the paper other than function machines. Most of this content appeared towards the end of the paper and pitched to the top end of Foundation. Most students would likely have struggled to deal with the fractional coefficient in the inequality in Q28.

Complexity analysis of Foundation Paper 1

While 2024’s Paper 1 distribution is more similar to post-pandemic papers than pre-pandemic papers, we are slowly beginning to see a greater demand on some questions on the Foundation paper. Last year, nearly 60% of the paper was C1 (standard procedural), whereas this year was just over half.

The proportion of C3 questions has increased significantly. Question patterns are approaching the patterns seen in June 2018 and 2019. This could explain why students perceive this year’s paper as difficult or more challenging than the 2023 cohort.

C2 content remains fairly consistent across the summer series. Roughly 20% of the available marks on the paper were for questions involving:

  • Interpreting charts or tables
  • Reading and synthesising information

Strand and sub strand bar chart for Foundation paper 1

Last year, lots of marks were awarded in the Number strand and fewer for the Ratio and Proportion strand than previously. This year’s Foundation Paper 1 appears to have a more evenly balanced mark allocation across the topics with no significant variation from normal patterns.

However, Paper 1 does have a slightly lower proportion of marks in the Ratio and Proportion and Statistics strands. Therefore, these could make more appearances in Papers 2 and 3.

I’d also expect to see more “algebra toolkit” skills on these papers, such as simplifying, collecting like terms, expanding or factorising.

Detailed analysis of Maths Paper 1 Higher 2024

Continuing the trend of Foundation Paper 1, this year’s Higher Paper 1 also felt mixed. The crossover content was fairly generous with a procedural nth term of a linear sequence as Q1 to ease students in. Additional straightforward marks were available later in the paper too. For example:

  • The triple bracket expansion in Q14
  • A surds questions in Q17a and b
  • Simultaneous equations in Q10

However, as with Foundation, some challenging questions made an early appearance in the paper. For example, Q9 required students to understand the function of a percentage multiplier to answer correctly. Complex wording here may have stumped quite a few students.

Other complex questions saw an unusual problem for recurring decimals and Q20 required students to “work backwards” with fractional indices. Students are typically more familiar with writing the fractional power using root notation and evaluating rather than the process needed here.

Last year, Higher Paper 1 had fewer unfamiliar topic combinations than some of the previous series, and this continued in 2024. A couple of questions were asked in unusual ways, but these questions generally stayed within a single content domain.

Complexity of questions in Maths Paper 1 Higher 2023 compared to previous years

Higher paper 1 complexity analysis

2022 and 2023’s Higher Paper 1 had a very similar complexity distribution. In particular, there was a higher ratio of C1 to C3 questions than the pre-pandemic June papers. Perhaps this reflected allowances made in exam writing to account for the disruption these cohorts experienced.

While 2024’s Higher Paper 1 had slightly more marks available for multi-step problem-solving questions than the last two June series, it’s not quite back to pre-COVID distributions just yet.

C2 content is slightly down on this year’s Higher Paper 1, with around 13% of the marks available for questions involving reasoning, interpreting charts or tables, and reading and synthesising information. This isn’t a significant variation.

8th class essay 1 maths exam paper

Similar strand distribution is shown within Number, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, and Geometry between the 2023 and 2024 Higher paper.

While fairly typical, there were slightly more Probability questions than in 2023 and slightly fewer Statistics. Generally, Statistics makes a more frequent appearance in Papers 2 and 3, where there is more space for it.

Interestingly, last year’s trend of less Ratio and Proportion content on Paper 1 continued. This could be partially due to this strand not appearing significantly in the common questions. There were quite a few more on Papers 2 and 3 last year, a similar trend could be expected for the next two 2024 papers.

What’s next? Preparing for Papers 2 and 3

As Paper 2 and 3 are both calculator papers and there is no difference between what can appear on either paper, the following suggestions apply to both Paper 2 and Paper 3.

The rest of this article looks at data across the past 5 years on both Foundation and Higher Edexcel exam papers to discuss in more detail how topics and questions have historically fallen across Papers 1, 2 and 3. This data analysis provides suggestions about what you might see in this year’s Papers 2 and 3. Each section and chart attempts to answer a key question that will inform the next stage of your GCSE revision.

Naturally, some topics or types of questions are more suited to either the non-calculator paper or the two calculator papers. For example, questions with marks available for accurate calculation methods, such as arithmetic, appear more frequently on the Non-Calculator paper.

However, these topics can also appear on the Calculator papers as a ‘show that’ or ‘spot the error’ question. Often, they are assumed skills for more advanced work.

Topics which don’t require a calculator but tend to appear more frequently on the two Calculator papers because there is less room for them on the Non-Calculator paper include:

  • Transformations
  • Constructions
  • Sketching and transforming graphs

This skew is more apparent on Higher than Foundation, with the Higher Calculator papers usually containing less explicit work on Number and Proportion and more on Algebra and Shape.

The topics below have appeared on half or more of all series so far. They have also either appeared exclusively on the Calculator papers or have a significant proportion (< 80%) of appearances on the Calculator papers.

Traditionally, many of these are crossover topics and some have appeared very frequently in the previous four series. Therefore, it is unlikely that all of the topics listed below will appear in 2024 . Anything relevant to 2024 Paper 1 is noted in italics.

Which topics have appeared on most Calculator papers so far?

The topics below have appeared on 75% of all series of live exam papers, either on Paper 2 or Paper 3, or both. This means there’s a good probability that some of these will come up this year on either of the Calculator papers.

Anything relevant to this year’s Paper 1 is noted in italics.

This would be a good place to start when collating a “general Calculator Paper” practice booklet. There are some suggestions of questions that you could use with students so they know what sorts of things to expect.

Which topics haven’t been seen for a while.

This selection of topics only appeared occasionally in recent series as main topics (some may be embedded in other questions).

These are ones to watch out for as they are assessed less frequently, but perhaps due a turn this year!

Some topics listed here, such as loci, are either very infrequently assessed or are demanding for that particular tier, such as quadratic equations on Foundation papers.

Topics such as these are good to prioritise once students are confident and fluent with the essentials for each paper, but they’re not an area to focus all of their revision.

What’s next for your GCSE maths revision?

That concludes our Foundation and Higher Paper 1 analysis. The dates for the next two GCSE maths papers are:

  • Paper 2 – Monday 3rd June
  • Paper 3 – Monday 10th June

We’ll be back with an updated hit list and further analysis between Papers 2 and 3.

The suggested list of topics won’t change significantly between these two papers, but we’ll be able to narrow down the hit list for Paper 3 once students sit Paper 2.

Keep an eye out for a more in-depth analysis of the whole series later this academic year. We’ll be thinking about how you can use this year’s exam questions with next year’s cohort and doing some more data-crunching to look at how this series sits in the wider context of previous Edexcel Maths exam papers.

We’ll also be back in August for our Results Day blog, where we find out how students have done in Maths and across the board in the 2024 GCSE exams.

Class 10 Hindi previous year question papers hold significant importance for students preparing for their board exams. Here’s why:

Understanding of the Exam System

Question papers from prior years provide information on the marking scheme, question distribution, and test format. Students gain confidence and lessen exam anxiety by using these cards to familiarize themselves with the testing procedure.

Comprehending Trends

Students can discern a range of recurrent inquiries, significant motifs, and often discussed subjects by scrutinizing last year’s examination materials. They are better able to organize their reading and concentrate on the subjects that will probably be covered in the upcoming exam .

Exam Preparation Assessment

One useful method for determining exam readiness is to complete the previous year’s question papers . Students can use it to evaluate their own strengths and weaknesses, pinpoint areas that require more focus, and adjust their evaluation strategies accordingly.

Practice and Revision

Answering past year’s exam questions gives students plenty of opportunity to practice, which is essential for success in any exam. They may put their theoretical knowledge to use, assess how well they understand concepts, and hone their problem-solving techniques . Additionally, editing through these articles improves recollection of key concepts and reinforces what has been learned.

Time Management Skills

When it comes to board exams, where students have to answer a lot of questions in a short amount of time, time management is essential. Students can learn efficient time management techniques by practicing past year question papers. This will help them manage their time wisely for each part and finish the paper within the allotted time.

Test-like Conditions

Students mimic the real test setting by working through past year’s question papers in an exam-like setting, complete with time limits and no access to notes or textbooks. They perform better on exam day since they are more accustomed to the strain and difficulties of the test.

Booster of Confidence

Students who successfully complete past year’s question papers feel more accomplished and confident about their preparation efforts. It increases their confidence and inspires them to approach the real exam with optimism.

All things considered, Class 10 Hindi previous year question papers are priceless tools that help students prepare for their exams thoroughly, from learning the format of the test to refining their problem-solving techniques and boosting their self-assurance before the big day.

Certainly! Here are some tips to excel in your CBSE Class 10 Hindi exam along with insights from Class 10 Hindi previous year question papers:

Coverage of the Syllabus

Verify that you have fully studied the complete syllabus. As per the CBSE curriculum, pay attention to subjects like prose, poetry, grammar, and writing techniques.

Practice Writing

To enhance your writing abilities, write essays , letters, and paragraphs on a regular basis. Make sure you stay true to the requirements of the question while preserving correct formatting, coherence, and clarity.

Grammar and Language Usage

Review sentence structure, voice, narration, and tenses in sentences. Work on grammar problems from textbooks and past year’s exam questions to improve your language skills.

Reading Comprehension

To improve your reading abilities, practice reading comprehension passages from previous year’s test questions. When responding to comprehension questions, pay close attention to the supporting facts, major ideas, and arguments.

Develop Your Vocabulary

Expand your knowledge by consistently picking up new terms and seeing them used in context. Utilize practice exercises, lists of vocabulary, and flashcards to strengthen your word power.

Give yourself enough time to review before the test. To reinforce your understanding, go over the main ideas, syntax conventions, and significant subjects covered in previous year’s test questions.

Time management

Study time management skills by completing sample papers in the allotted time during the test. Set aside time for each segment based on the total number of marks, and give priority to answering questions that are more important.

Seek Assistance When Needed

If you run into trouble understanding any subject or idea, don’t be afraid to ask your teachers, fellow students, or internet resources for assistance. Your confidence and exam performance might both increase if you swiftly clear up any uncertainties.

Remain Calm and Confident

Have a good outlook on the test and remain composed both before and on test day. Have confidence in your skills and take the exam head-on.
